Obituary of Philip Allen Pharr

Dr. Philip A. Pharr passed away on May 17, 2023, at the age of 83, after a long and well-lived life. He was born in 1939 in Statesville, NC, to Dennis M. and Margaret S. Pharr. Dr. Pharr graduated from Pfeiffer College and Duke Divinity School, and he was an ordained minister with the United Methodist Church. He was a professor of philosophy and religion at Pfeiffer College for over 30 years and part-time at Appalachian State University for 12 years. Phil and his wife of over 35 years, Dottie (who preceded him in death) spent their retirement years in Boone, where Phil enjoyed reading, gardening, and running. He loved black coffee, oatmeal cookies, and animals, especially feeding bread to the deer and donuts to the raccoons. He was known for his dry wit and sense of humor. Phil is survived by his three children: Jennifer Van Gilder (Tom), Angie Pharr, and Matt Pharr (Trish); three grandchildren: Molly Johnson (Colin), Emma Van Gilder, and Abigail Van Gilder; and one great grandchild: Lexi Witcher. A graveside service will be held at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens of Boone on Thursday afternoon, May 25, 2023 at 2 o'clock. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Watauga Humane Society would be appreciated.
