Obituary of Shirley Ellen Miller

Shirley Ellen Hicks Miller, 70, of Deep Gap, passed away on December 29, 2022, after an epic and hard-fought 5-year battle with cancer. Through all of this, she never lost her faith or her good spirits and positive attitude. Shirley was born on April 18, 1952, in Watauga County. A daughter to the late Andy and Mary Hicks. She was a homemaker, avid gardener, mom, and the best grandmother three kids could ever ask for. Shirley has many friends and is loved by many. She was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone. Shirley loved gardening her flowers, fishing with her husband Ted and granddaughters, traveling with her family, and hosting holidays for her large extended family. Her main love in life was spending time with her granddaughters and family. She told Ted recently she loved her life she had and wouldn't change a thing about it. Shirley is survived by her husband Ted, daughter Dawn, son Rob, granddaughters Abigail, Mallory, and Zoe, brother Jimmy, sister Edna (husband Kevin), brother Joe, nephews Dale, Ben (son AJ, daughter Ivy), JC (son Doyle), Dakota, Tommy, and niece Nancy (daughters Emma, Brittany, and Aubrey). In addition to her father and mother, she was preceded in death by nephew Doyle Hicks and brother Johnny Hicks. A Celebration of Life and Memorial Service will be conducted Sunday, January 1, 2023, at 2:00 at Austin and Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Pastors C.E. Greene and Bryan Miller will officiate. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 prior to the service. Austin and Barnes Funeral Home is serving the Miller Family.
