Obituary of William Alan Brown

William Alan Brown age 58, passed away on November 22, 2022 with his mom, brother, aunts and uncle by his side. He bravely fought cancer for over three years. We are heartbroken, but know he is no longer suffering. He is running freely again, this time along the Milky Way and with his Uncle Bill. When Alan was diagnosed with colon cancer, he immediately began to tell his friends and co-workers about the need for early screening. Alan was loved by all who knew him. He had a wonderful sense of humor and never met a stranger. He was an avid runner and his favorite races were the Cooper Ridge Bridge Run, Spooky Duke and the High Country Turkey Trot. He would wear the most outlandish outfits. His running buddies looked forward to seeing what flashy outfit he'd come up with each year. Alan graduated from WHS in 1981 where he was on the varsity tennis team. He worked as assistant women's tennis coach with Gene Fields at ASU and worked as assistant tennis coach with Bob Light at Hound Ears. He attended Appalachian State University and continued his love of ASU by working at the University Bookstore for sixteen years. Alan was his mother's rock. He constantly encouraged her, provided for her and loved her fiercely. Alan is survived by his mother, Margot Cobb Brown Hampton; brother, Jason Bascom-Sean and wife, Alexandra Hampton; niece, August Belle and nephew, Atticus Flynn, whom he loved beyond compare; aunt, Patt Cobb Hampton and husband, Phil; cousins, Tricia and husband, Brian and Tracy and her husband Matt; aunt, Rev. Dr. Erin Kirby; cousin, Ashley and Husband Justin; and his canine pal, Sherlock. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Jack D. Cobb Sr. grandmother, whom he lovingly called "Grancy", Eva King Cobb; uncles, Bill Cobb and Jack Cobb Jr. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Watauga County Humane Society, the Watauga Hospitality House, the American Cancer Society, and the SECU Family House in Winston-Salem. A celebration of life is being planned for late spring or early summer 2023.
