Obituary of Leonard Foley Mikul

Leonard "Lonny" Foley Mikul passed away at the age of 71 in Boone, North Carolina on Saturday September 26th, 2020 due to complications from Covid-19. He was born in Birmingham, Alabama on October 21st, 1948 to parents John Charles Mikul and Margaret Morrison Mikul. Lonny married Susan Vernon in 1971 with whom he had two sons. He graduated from the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University in 1977, and practiced law as a criminal defense attorney in Florida and Alabama. Always dedicated to justice for all, he and Susan were part of the AmeriCorps VISTA law program in Key West, Florida. In 2004 he successfully argued in front of the Alabama Supreme Court to have the death sentence of an intellectually disabled defendant remanded back to the trial court. Lonny lived in Key West, Florida from 1977 to 1994, and Bay Minette, Alabama from 1994 to 2019. He was a faithful member of St. Agatha Parish Catholic Church in Bay Minette, Alabama, and a core part of their choir. He loved playing guitars of all types and owned many, including classical, electric, banjos, dobros, and a pedal steel guitar. Lonny also loved to cheer on the Alabama Crimson Tide. Lonny is survived by his two sons Christopher Vernon Mikul of Boone, North Carolina and Matthew Patrick Mikul of Sunnyvale, California and his sister Anna Lou Laguaite of Gainesville, Georgia. His funeral service was held on October 2nd, 2020 at Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham, Alabama, where he was laid to rest with his family. Donations in Lonny's name can be made to Joe Biden's Presidential campaign. Lonny will forever live in our hearts, and his legacy will be carried on.
