Please share a memory of Gerard to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Gerard (Gerry) Couture, age 86, passed away on June 11, 2020. While he traveled a great deal, his final residence was in Boone, North Carolina. Gerry grew up in Lowell, Massachusetts and was the son of Edward and Rose (Letendre) Couture. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1951 and reenlisted in the Air Force and completed 23 years of service before retiring. Gerry served in Korea and Vietnam, and received the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, the National Security Medal, and the Korean Presidential Unit Citation. Gerry was a consummate golfer his entire life and had a golf swing admired by all that played the game with him. His best friend Bob Hayek said his swing was "poetry in motion". Even when Gerry suffered an amputation of his lower left leg, he continued to play golf even with his prosthesis. Gerry also was a consummate sailor, and sailed around the world twice, alone, first in a 32 foot boat he dearly loved, named The Last Resort, and then in a 26 foot boat named Atom. He also sailed to France twice in Atom. Gerry was very independent and enjoyed cooking and spending hours watching golf tournaments. He always had great tales to tell of his travels. He was an avid reader and was so adored by his family and especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Gerry married Jacqueline in France in 1959 and had one son Johnny who passed away in 2014. He is survived by his brother Raymond Couture, his nephew Rick Couture, his niece Denise Thomas and several other nieces and nephews. He is also survived by two granddaughters Jessica and Samantha Couture living in France as well as two great grandchildren Cerise Boero-Couture and Gabriel Carmusciano. Gerry requested that a funeral not be held and that family and friends should just remember the great times and memories of which he was a vital part. Online condolences may be shared with the Couture family at www.austinandbarnesfuneralhome.com.
