Obituary of Virginia P. Hartley

Mrs. Virginia Oretha Polk Hartley, passed into her heavenly home on Aug. 22, 2016. She was born in Trenton, Fla., the daughter of William Riley Polk and Mattie Luginia Smith Polk on Dec. 13, 1925. She was predeceased in death by her husband Cornelius Talmadge Hartley, Jr. and by 13 siblings. Three half-brothers: Richard Harley Polk, Shelton H. Polk, and Denver Polk. Two half-sisters: Nellie Polk and Dova Lettie P. Mash. Six brothers Lee Roy Polk, William Glenn Polk, Duward Daring Polk, Hansel G. Polk and two infant brothers. Two sisters: Jean Bell Polk and Eva Ray Polk. She is survived by one son, Neil Hartley and wife Audrey of Boone, two grandsons, Dennis and Tal Hartley both of Boone, one great granddaughter, Eryn A. Hartley of Parker, Colorado, and her extended family, Tatum, Aubrey, Luke, Alison and Mark Garrett of Marion, NC, and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Hartley was a dental assistant who was employed by Dr. Mains of Daytona Beach Florida, who convinced her to come to Blowing Rock one summer as his assistant. She then was employed by Dr. Matheson and later by Dr. Gene Reese. She loved her work and walked to work for many years of employment. The family would like to thank Jennifer Lusk, caregiver, and the nurses, nurses assistants and staff at Blowing Rock Hospital and Davant Extended Care for their care, love and support during these last four months. Funeral services for Mrs. Virginia Polk Hartley will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 2 PM at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. David Hockett, Rev. Jeff McClain and Rev. Elaine Hall. Burial will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens. The family will receive friends Thursday afternoon prior to the service from 1 oclock until 2 oclock at Austin & Barnes.
