Obituary of Raymond E. Werhane

Mr. Raymond Edward �Ray� Werhane, Jr. age 91, of Boone, passed away Friday afternoon, April 29, 2016. Born September 16, 1924 in Evanston, Illinois, he was a son of the late Raymond and Margaret May Werhane. Ray was a senior in high school when the attack on Pearl Harbor occurred, this prompted him to enroll at Oberlin College where he played football and participated in the Navy�s V-12 Officer Program. Assigned to the USN Pacific Fleet, Ray�s detachment was one of the first units to deploy to Hiroshima after the atomic bomb was dropped on the city. After the war Ray received his MBA from Harvard University, worked on Madison Avenue in advertising, then with various non-profit agencies and eventually worked in real estate in Texas and Hawaii. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Boone and a familiar face at Bare Essentials Market where he worked full time for a number of years. Ray was preceded in death by his wife Linda Johnson Werhane and his daughter Diane Lee Eaton. He is survived by a daughter, Linda Ann Mohr; his mother in law, Pearl Johnson; close friend and caregiver Martha Ward; and 6 grandchildren, Michelle Bowden, Keith and Mark Eaton, Kate, Wade and Luke Peters, and a number of great grandchildren. Memorial services for Mr. Ray Werhane will be conducted Wednesday morning, May 4, 2016 at 11 o�clock at the First Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends at the church following services. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Medi Home Hospice, 400 Shadowline Drive, Suite 102, Boone, NC 28607.
