Iva Lee Hayes, age 89, of Jack Hayes Road, Boone, passed away Sunday afternoon, January 3, 2016 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem after complications from recent struggles with pneumonia. Born December 5, 1926 in Watauga County, Iva Lee was a daughter of Thomas and Carrie Winebarger Jones. Her great joys were her family, her flowers and gardens and any kind of food preservation, her many wonderful friends, and the Farmers Market. Iva Lee was one of the organizers and a charter member of the Watauga County Farmers Market and enjoyed selling her beautiful flowers, canned goods and crafts. Her famous pumpkin cakes and homemade kraut were especially enjoyed by her many loyal customers and were shipped to their friends all over the world. Talking with customers was a special treat for her. Due to Iva Lees and husband, Lees declining health, she had to stop working at the Market in 2010 when she was well into her 80s. That was a really sad thing for her, but she enjoyed getting numerous calls from customers begging her to please make one more run of kraut for me. Mrs. Hayes is survived by her children; son, Joseph Edward Hayes and wife, Jerry Sue, of Boone; daughters, Judy Greene and husband, Dean, of Deep Gap and Evelyn (Sissy) Moore and husband, George Marshall, of Boone; five grandchildren, Chris Hayes, Brandy Eldreth, Ronald Moore, Melissa Cook, and Nicole James; eight great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Mabel Brown of Warrenton, VA and Brenda Gragg and husband, Johnny, of Boone; one brother, Clyde Jones and wife, Nancy, of Boone; and two sisters-in-law, Marie Jones and Georgia Jones, both of Boone. A number of nieces and nephews also survive. She was the wife of the late Edward Lee Hayes and was preceded in death by her parents: two sisters, Stella Jones and JoAnn Moretz; five brothers: Lester Jones, Chester Jones, Kenneth Jones, Bobby Jones, and an infant brother. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, January 7, at 2:30 p.m. at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Chapel, officiated by Rev. Burl Greer and Rev. Delmar James.
