Raymond Scott Porter, Jr., 79, of Valley Street, Kannapolis, and formerly of Blowing Rock, passed away Thursday, December 17, 2015 at his home. Born February 27, 1936 in Miami, FL, he was a son of Raymond Porter Sr. and Margaret Page Porter. After serving a tour in the US Air Force, Mr. Porter moved to Blowing Rock to establish and operate the Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise in Boone.
He is survived by his daughters, Dolly Brookins and husband Chuck, of Spring Hill, FL, Gail Wickett and husband Randy, of Greensboro, Cindy Hedgepath and husband Dan, of Lake Lure, and sons, David Depompa and wife, Debbie of Huntersville and Danny Porter of Morganton; grandchildren, Kelly Depompa of Charlotte, Andrew Depompa of Raleigh, Patrick and Brittney Porter, both of Kannapolis, Ryan Wickett of TX, Sarah Wickett of Greensboro, Raymond Spicer of GA and Charlie Brookins of FL; his sister, Margaret Ajac and husband James, of Raleigh; nephew, Scott Ajac, nieces, Pamela Freeman and husband, Philip and Kim Hammerstein; and great-nieces, Audrey and Sophie Hammerstein; and special family friends, Lonnie and Michele Holbrook and Emalie and Sawyer Holbrook, all of Kannapolis. He was preceded in death by his wife, Della Jeanette Porter; daughter, Cathy Depompa Kelly; and his parents.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, December 21, at 2 PM at Austin & Barnes Funeral Chapel, officiated by Rev. Doug Pierce, Sr. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 oclock, prior to services. Military graveside honors provided by the American Legion Post 130 and Disabled American Veterans Chapter will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Blowing Rock.
