Obituary of James Roscoe Hartley

James Roscoe Hartley, age 73 from Boone, known by friends and family as Jim, passed away peacefully at the Blowing Rock Rehabilitation Center on Dec. 16, 2015 while surrounded by family.
He was born in Watauga County and grew up in Boone and Key West, Florida. Jim was an outdoorsman, who enjoyed spending time with his family sailing, skiing, and fishing. He was a lover of the nature and history of the North Carolina Mountains. He greatly enjoyed getting to know people and sharing stories with friends.
Jim graduated from Appalachian High School and attended Broward Junior College and Lees McRae College. He served in the Military at Fort Sill, OK, and Fort Jackson, SC and was an active member of the National Guard Reserves who received awards for excellent marksmanship. His professional career spanned over 50 years. He was a land developer and a self-employed surveyor in Boone who enthusiastically mapped hundreds of land deeds in the region and in several states.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Roscoe Hartley and Ruby Whitesides Hartley.
Jim is survived by his wife of 47 years, Iva Wilson Hartley; one daughter, Heather Hartley and her husband, Phil Reynolds; one son, Eric Hartley and his wife, Lynette Brown Hartley; one brother, Gary Hartley; one sister, Elaine Jolly, and one nephew, Scott Ferwerda. In addition he is survived by two grandchildren, Ethan Hartley and Eli Hartley, and one step-grandson, Sam Reynolds.
A celebration of the life of Jim Hartley will be held at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home, 194 Queen Street, Boone, N.C. on Sunday, Dec. 20th, 2015. The family will begin receiving friends at 12:30pm with a service at 2:00pm. The service will be followed by a burial at Mount Lawn Cemetery.
