Obituary of Newland H. Bush
Please share a memory of Newland to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Newland Bush, surrounded by his wife and children, entered into eternal rest on Friday, August 21, 2015 in Annapolis, MD. Newland was born in Lenoir, NC in 1937, to Ralph Newland Bush and Hazel Marie Bush. He enjoyed playing sports as a child, particularly baseball, as well as having a flair for being somewhat of a class clown. It was this attribute and his cheerful demeanor that earned him the nickname Sonnie. He graduated in 1960 from Aurora College in Illinois. After college, Sonnie served honorably in the US Armys Counterintelligence Corps (CIC) until 1966, before turning his sights to a career in law. While working for State Farm Insurance, he attended the University of Baltimore Law School in the evenings. Upon completing law school, he began a long and illustrious career as a trial lawyer in Prince Georges County, MD that spanned more than three decades.
He lived in Fort Washington, MD most of his life. A devout family man, Sonnie loved sharing with family and friends his passions for gardening, his hardware store in Accokeek, MD, and his farm in southern MD. He loved fishing and boating, and spending time with his family at his cabin in the mountains of West Virginia. He also loved fine automobiles, and his beloved Washington Redskins football and Washington Nationals baseball teams. After retirement, he spent many years in his beloved home state of North Carolina, in the mountains of Blowing Rock. He will be remembered for his remarkable wit, intelligence and love of life that was contagious to everyone who knew him.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Clara Jane Bush; son Nathaniel Bush of Blowing Rock, NC and daughter Rebecca Kimble and husband Kevin of Harwood, MD; grandsons Jacob and Matthew Kimble, & granddaughter Kirra Laws-Bush; sisters Juanita Setzer of Lenoir, NC, Carolyn Bush of Lenoir, NC, Linda and husband Charles Spicer of Matthews, NC, and Pixie Bush of Lenoir, NC; sister-and-law Mary Kent Poteat of Fernandina Beach, FL, along with many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
