Edward Lee Hayes, 88, of Jack Hayes Road, Boone, passed away Thursday morning, August 20, 2015, at Glenbridge Health & Rehabilitation in Boone.
Born December 23, 1926 in Watauga County, he was a son of Thomas B. and Blanche Williams Hayes. After serving in the US Army during WWII, Lee returned to the family farm to raise tobacco, cabbage, cattle, horses, and put up hay for his needs and for others. After retiring from the physical plant at ASU, he enjoyed organizing and riding the wagon train with grandchildren and neighborhood kids, and raising fox dogs, coon dogs and beagles.
Mr. Hayes is survived by his wife of 67 years, Iva Lee Jones Hayes; son, Joseph Edward Hayes and wife, Jerry Sue, of Boone; daughters, Judy Greene and husband, Dean, of Deep Gap and Evelyn (Sissy) Moore and husband, George Marshall, of Boone; five grandchildren, Chris Hayes, Brandy Eldreth, Ronald Moore, Melissa Cook, and Nicole James; eight great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are sister, Grace Greene, and brother, Jack Hayes and wife, Glada, all of Boone and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death his parents; one sister, Faye Ragan; and one brother, John Hayes.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, August 22, 2015 at 3:30 PM at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Chapel, officiated by Rev. Delmar James and Rev. Burl Greer. The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon from 2 until 3:30, prior to services, at Austin & Barnes. Graveside services will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.
