Obituary of Katy Love Blackburn

Katy Love Blackburn died peacefully Saturday May 9, 2015. She is survived by her daughter Kathryn L. Kitty Lumpkin of Blowing Rock and son G. Thomas Lumpkin and his wife Vicki, and sister Peggy Love Day, all of Santa Fe, NM. Katy was born in Winston-Salem in 1923, the oldest of four children of Charles Oscar Love and Myrtle Rutledge Love. She attended Salem College where she majored in Music. In 1944, she married G. Thomas Lumpkin, Jr., the father of her children. She began her career teaching music, then became a kindergarten teacher. In the 1950s and 1960s, she helped found and direct two of the largest church-related private kindergartens in North Carolina--at White Memorial Presbyterian Church in Raleigh and Wake Forest Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. In 1966, she married Dr. J. Glenn Blackburn and moved to Alexandria VA, and then to Raleigh before moving to Blowing Rock. She loved her family, music, beauty, crossword puzzles, a good book and bridge. She was a wonderful woman, dearly loved by her family and friends, and she will be greatly missed. A graveside service will be held at Forsyth Memorial Cemetery in Winston-Salem on Thursday, May 14th. A musical memorial service is planned for 3:00 pm Sunday, May 17th at Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church in Blowing Rock, followed by a reception at Blowing Rock Country Club. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Blowing Rock Community Library or the Appalachian Regional Library in West Jefferson, NC.
