Mr. Herbert Rheiner Garland, Jr., age 82, of Sorrento Forrest Drive, Blowing Rock, passed away Monday afternoon, April 27th at Watauga Medical Center. He was born on April 5, 1933 in Warsaw, Virginia and was the son of the late Herbert Rheiner and Virginia Sydnor Garland. Herb attended Virginia Tech and graduated with a BS degree in Engineering. He served in the U.S. Air Force and the Air Force Reserve, obtaining the rank of Captain. He worked for the Western Electric Company in Winston-Salem, N.C. as a Senior Engineer in the Government Projects Division for his entire career, dealing with the Army�s Nike-series of ground-to-air missiles and the Navy�s Submarine detection systems. He retired in 1987 and moved to Blowing Rock, N.C. in 1993. Herb attended Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church in Blowing Rock, serving as Elder and giving of his time and talents to other Church committees. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends for his kind and generous spirit.
Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 56 years, Margaret Kirkpatrick Garland: daughters, Debbie Holland and husband Courts of Charlotte, N.C., and Patricia Coppedge and husband Keith of Indianapolis, IN. One brother, Julian W. Garland of Warsaw, Va., and granddaughters, Ashley and Katie Holland, and grandson, Andrew Coppedge.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Herb Garland will be held Saturday, May 2nd at Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m.. Visitation with the family will be in the Fellowship Hall, preceding the service, from 10-11 a.m.
