Charles Edward Whitman, age 82, of Grand Blvd., Boone, passed away Saturday morning. February 7th, 2015, at Watauga Medical Center. Born June 5, 1932 in Salisbury, he was a son of John Shelton and Marie McDaniel Whitman. Charlie was a member of Advent Christian Church. Mr. Whitman retired from the NC State Bureau of Investigation as a Special Agent in Charge, serving the state for 30 years. For 3 years he served as director of the City-County Bureau of Criminal Identification in Greenville, NC for 3 years, and for 15 years after retirement from the state, he served as the loss prevention manager for Belk Department Store in Boone. Mr. Whitman is survived by his wife of 37 years, Patricia Maddux Whitman; former spouse, Peggy Whitman of Lenoir; son, Gary Whitman and wife, Mary Lynn, of Davidson; and grandson, Patrick Whitman and wife, Ashley, of Blacksburg, Va. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Wayne Whitman; and a sister, Linda Whitman. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, February 13th, 2015, at 2 PM at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Chapel, officiated by Pastors Gordon Noble, Munsey Millaway and Robert Earp. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Blowing Rock. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 until 8 oclock at Austin & Barnes.
