My deepest condolences to Ann and Cindy for the loss of your brother, a truly good man.
Over the years I would mostly see Tommy in the Court House or riding the mower in the Pitts Cemetery.
Back in the 1960’s our family summer home was down the road from Tommy’s grandmother, Mrs Pitts, later his home, and Tommy would come over to go fishing in the stream with my brother Terry. To be allowed to join them I had to carry the Kool-Aid and turn the rocks over at the stream to catch salamanders for bait. One day they walked down what is now Russ Cornett Rd and wouldn’t let me go, so of course I followed. About a mile down the road, I saw them fishing in the stocked pond that they had heard rumors that the owner had a gun and didn’t take kindly to anyone fishing in his pond. From my hiding place in the woods, I called out in the deepest voice my 10-year-old frame could muster “Who's that fishing in my pond?” They turned tail and ran so fast down the road they disappeared in a cloud of dust. You will be missed Tommy!

Not only a neighbor for years and an elementary school and high school buddy... a sleigh riding, sling shot fighting, ball playing pal. God only knows why time and distance does this to us and one day we turn and their gone. Thanks Tommy for making memories with us that only we could understand and enjoy. Bye my friend till we meet again.

Tommy was a person I looked up to ever since I met him. He coached me in 7th and 8th grade football many years ago. He inspired me to coach when I got old enough. Had even the chance to coach his son . Loved this man see you again buddy

Tommy was one of the best men I ever knew. He is proof that a good man dies to soon and a man that proves that the good Lord was indeed generous and made more horse's butts than he did horses will live forever.
Tommy was either a tackle or a guard on the Watauga High football team . He weighed in at an impressive 160 pounds or so, This goes to show that it is not the size of the dog in the fight that counts , it is the amount of fight in the dog. Tommy and I both went to ASU with Industrial Arts being our major. After we finished, we both went to work for Watauga County in the tax mapping department.
The maps were not in good shape and had a lot of errors in them . We worked eight hours a day taking complaints about things that were incorrect and then came back after we got some supper and worked at least six hours fixing the errors. One day an older man came in and jumped on Tommy, saying that he had already been into the office and the error had not been fixed. Tommy told him that he had never seen him and told him to go talk to me. Tommy then went and hid in the bathroom. I had never seen the man either. The guy that worked in the tax mapping office before Tommy and I did had a black beard and black hair as Tommy and I did. I never did convince the man that he saw the previous mapper and not either of us.. Tommy laughed at me for months about that.
Eventually we got the maps in better shape and decided we would go fishing one evening. We left work at five. I was at the river by 5:30. Tommy did not come until after 7.00. The sun was down. I had not had a bite . Tommy shows up with his fishing pole with a hook and sinker on the line. No bait . I was using corn for bait. Tommy gets some corn out of the can, baits his hook, and casts out into the river, His bait is about a foot from mine. The water was low and you could see a nice trout swim out from behind a rock and bite Tommy’s hook. Tommy reeled it in, put on some more corn, and casts out in about the same spot. Another trout swims up and Tommy catches it. This happens four more times. On the sixth fish, Tommy pulls it out of the water hard enough that it hits me in the side of the head and knocks my glasses off. Tommy only needed one more to have his limit. I was not going to be skunked so I threw the rest of the corn into the river and went home. This is where I got the saying that something objectionable is still better than being hit up the side of the head with a wet fish.
We were talking about names for our children. Tommy said I should name mine Collard Green or Creasey Green. I told him he should name his Arm Pitts or Grease Pitts.
Tommy was a valued member at the Watauga Gun Club. He served in several capacities as a member of the Executive Committee He was co director of the trap discipline. He helped out with the Blue Ridge Claybreakers and the Watauga High hunter education teams.
He loved to hunt. We did a lot of dove hunting together. On one occasion he had an abscessed tooth. You could see him grimace in pain every time he pulled the trigger on his shotgun. He shot at every dove that came in range.
On another occasion we were in a dove field in Statesville. This field was where a farmer charged a small amount to hunt in his field. Tommy, my brother and I decided we could not leave the man’s field in the shape it was in (trash from other “hunters” was lying everywhere). My brother had some trash bags in his pickup. We picked up a truck bed load of trash. It was dark when we left the field. The farmer stopped us as we were leaving the field and asked us if we were coming back on Monday. My brother had to work, but Tommy and I said we were going to be there. The farmer said to look him up before we went into the field. When we got there he told us not to go out in the field and he took us to his feed lot. He refused payment for letting us hunt, but told us to shoot the pigeons that had taken over his barn. It was the best shooting we had ever done. We both limited out in a very short time and shot feral pigeons until we ran out of shells.
I’m going to miss that boy. Bad.
