My condolences on your loss. I was a student at App from 01-05, and I had the pleasure of going on Harvard's legendary Southwest Spring Break trip in 02, and his inaugural Arctic trip in summer of 03.
I have a tremendous amount of respect and admiration for Harvard. I have some really fond memories of good times we shared. He beat me in arm wrestling at a pub in CO much to my embarrassment/surprise. Me and him had the honor of going on a Caribou hunt with Peter Yossi of the Gwich'in, one of the more surreal and formative experiences of my early adult life.
I always admired his laid back attitude, positivity, and energy. He was a "wise old man" to me at the time, but he could hang with us students on whatever we were trying to do from hiking to socializing.
Harvard was truly extraordinary and he made an impression on me that will be with me forever.
Sincerely,
Tyler Jones

So sorry to learn of Harvard's passing. I worked with Harvard in the 1990s when he headed Appalachian Voices, an environmental group that reflected his passionate love of the planet and the trees and mountains that made living on the planet a spiritual experience. He cared about dying trees and then when the coal industry started ripping away entire mountains, taking out the forests along the way, Harvard organized the endangered people in the way of this process to take action against it. A singularly inspirational leader of his times.

Harvard welcomed me into the Department of Anthropology in 1978. He was a valued colleague. I always admired the way he created enthusiasm among students for archaeology, forensics, the Southwest, and environmentalism. He fought for all the good causes. I will miss him.

My first encounter with Harvard at what was the old Boone flea market where the Cracker Barrel and so many other stores have been built . In the very early 80’s he sold items he obtained on trips to Mexico and I bought a few! The stories he had to tell about his many adventures!
Harvard was a force of nature that brought so many people into his world of environmental activism! He brought so much positive attention to Boone and ASU and made us all better in having known him! Thank you Harvard! May you rest in eternal peace.
Peace, love and prayers to his family.

Harvard was a great educator, an incredible mentor and true friend. He did not mind in the least that I was a right-wing, misguided fanatic who, as his teaching assistant, wore khaki pants and a button down shirt (aka: aristocratic prep school attire) to teach his Forensic Anthropology and Osteology classes.
I never spoke unkindly of his fondness for southwest Indian sweat-lodges and the activities of GreenPeace. We seemed to balance each other out and enjoyed hearing the “other political side” of a topic.
His devotion to education, fervor for good and honorable causes and genuine love for people (especially his students), is unmatched.
He will be alway be fondly remembered.
My thoughts and prayers are with Harvard’s family.

Dr. Ayers was my mentor and dear friend that directed and guided me into the field of forensic anthropology. Through him, I was able to gain an internship with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in the summer of 1993 and then in 1997, I was able to get a job there, of which I’m still employed there to this day. I will sincerely miss seeing and talking y to o him of things forensic and my sincerest condolences to his family.

Mackie, as I think you know, Harvard was my best friend in high school. We shared many, many special times. I am so glad you and I got to meet. And sorry the four of us did not see each other more. I wish for you peace and warm memories of a wonderful human being who left this world a better place. I loved looking at his Facebook page and seeing so many student reflections of the impact on their lives of his caring. David Hornbeck

Mackie & Family,
I am so very sorry to learn of Harvard's death. He was such a very nice person who cared deeply about the environment. The High Country and the World have benefited from that passion and action. It will be a glorious Day of Reunion when we are reunited with all those we love in the presence of He who loves us best. Harvard has transitioned and awaits y'all with no sense of loneliness, for negative emotions are not allowed in Heaven. May The Good Lord hold you in the Palm of His Hand, Mary

I’ll never forget the day that Harvard and Mackie came into the College of Business advising office wearing King Arthur and Gwendolyn costumes. It’s suited them perfectly!
