Ruth (Stevenson) Bowers, age 82, of West Jefferson, NC peacefully passed
01/18/23 due to a history of non-Hodgkins lymphoma.and, as of late, mesothelioma.
Ruth was born 06/27/40 in Wheeling, W.VA to the late Matilda (Allen) and Charles Stevenson. Ruth
graduated from Canton South High School, (CSHS) in 1958. She became a secretary for Canton
Local schools. She raised her children and returned to Canton Local schools as a school bus
driver, until retirement.
She moved to the mountains of NC, to be near her daughter, and was then diagnosed with mesothelioma
She underwent treatments in order to slow the progression; however, the cancer won..
Ruth's hobbies included: Gardening at her home, cross-stitch, corresponding via cards/letters,
baking Christmas cookies for her family and everyone of her elementary, junior high and high school
"bus kids". Ruth traveled with her daughter and son-in-law (Steve) on several occasions.
Ruth was a member of her class reunion committee, attended East Sparta United Methodist
church/choir. Ruth loved her church family.
She was preceded in death by husband (Ronald Bowers - 2009) of 50+ years, her son (Russell Bowers - 2004),
her "second daughter/friend (Patricia "Trish" Gunter - 2013), best friend (Beverly Hill - 2022), and the devastating
loss of her companion/friend (Bill Lewis - 2019).
She is survived by her biological daughter, Renee L. (Jon "Steve") Porter of NC; her very-loved grandson,
Ryan L. Bowers of OH; her sister Carolyn Walker of OH; friend Erma Booth of OH; her very best friend of 70+
years, Betty Stafford of NC. Ruth is also survived by her indoor cat (Middy) and a previous Yorkie (Raisin), adopted
out to a wonderful, caring couple as she could no longer care for her on her own.
A memorial service/celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, May 17th from 1:00-2:00 p.m, located at East Sparta
United Methodist Church with Pastor Peggy Garner officiating (all friends and family are welcome). A small social
gathering will follow in the fellowship hall of the church (please wear bright colors to the celebration of life service).
Burial will take place at the Magnolia Cemetary at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Ruth's memory may be made to East Sparta United Methodist Church.
