Dan was a special man and always so energetic. He was invested in our church community and he will be missed dearly. Our family was so grateful to have had a recent visit by Dan and Janet in our home. We had great conversation and fellowship and we will always cherish that. He brought us fresh baked bread and a butternut squash.

We were saddened to learn that Dan had passed away so suddenly. I do think a sudden death is always harder for the family to deal with....
Kay and I had visited with Janet and Dan on a few occasions....the last time in 2022 at their beautiful home (that we almost didn't find!) high up in the NC mountains. You didn't have to be around Dan very long to realize how smart he was....and so interested in just about everything....from farming... to politics...to helping people...to religion. And not only was he interested in so many things, but he knew way more than the average person....but with a spirit of humility that did not make you feel "uninformed". It amazed me all the things he and Janet were involved in and how willing they were to help out their neighbors or those in their church family who needed something they could provide. We could tell Dan was a man of deep faith who highly valued the church family that was SO supportive of them during their difficult times of significant health challenges. No doubt the lack of his presence there in the Vilas community will be keenly felt by all who were blessed to call him friend.
This verse from Revelation 14:13 seems very appropriate as we remember this good Christian man. "Blessed are those who die in the Lord...They are blessed indeed, for they will rest from all their toils and trials, for their good deeds follow them."

Dan was full of life. He could do anything from building something to making wine and beer. He had wealth of knowledge for so many things. I am sharing a memory I found. In 2013 Dan helped me with is knowledge of gardening. He had me get a Southern States seed book. Then we sat down and he marked all his “favorite” ones. I still have the booklet. Picture attached. Dan also was a good cook and made the best deer sausage I have ever had. I am glad I got to know him. Peace.

I was so saddened to learn of Dan’s very sudden death. Though I did not know him well, the memory that I do have is such a good one. Along with several Smithfield classmates of Janet’s I had a wonderful visit with Janet and Dan at their home a few years ago. Dan was so welcoming and eager to show us his apple trees. He sent me home with a big bag of the very best apples I’ve ever had. Every time I buy a honeycrisp apple I think of him and know that the ones I’m buying will never ever be as tasty as Dan’s.

I learned with shock and great sadness of the death of Dan Veilleux. While I have only known him for a few years, I had several occasions of contact with him and got to know him and considered him a friend. I am a volunteer with the Helping Hands Firewood Ministry, a charitable church-sponsored organization providing firewood for those who need it but cant afford to buy it. A few years back Dan donated several trees on his property to be used in the ministry. Therefore our crew of 6 to 8 or so would go to Dan's farm several times with our chainsaws and trailers and cut and load trees destined for our woodlot for splitting and distribution. Dan would eagerly help us in many ways, including using his big tractor to move logs around and load them on our trailers. His enthusiasm was contagious. He kept us entertained and greatly boosted our productivity. There were times when he and his wife would host our work crew to lunch at his house. The food was delicious and the company wonderful. Later on, as tree cutting at his farm diminished, he would come to the woodlot on regular work days and help us split firewood there.
Dan was truly a man for all seasons. We all benefited from his good nature and eagerness to help others. My condolences go out to Janet and to his entire family. We will all miss him deeply.

While I only met him a couple of times, Dan impressed me in his thoughtful presence.. One could sense his passion and intelligence, and had only to look around to see his many and diverse talents. And my impression that he was a kind and helpful friend to all seems true. I especially love Sondra’s words. My sincere condolences to Janet and his extended families. As you move on to the next chapter of life, I want to thank you for everything you have done for me. You always had a kind and loving way about you, and I appreciated your stories, advice about life, and funny nature. The Christmas holiday we shared was one of my favorite memories, as well as taking us around the beautiful property you tended to dutifully. Your delicious creations were always something I looked forward to. The applesauce! We were always left with our hands full because of your giving heart. You truly connected people and brought people together, and I'm so grateful for having you in my life. You will be missed dearly ❤️

When Creation was complete, God thought, " What I need now is someone to truly appreciate and love the earth. To plant and cultivate and conserve resources". So, God made a DAN. And fortunately, Dan decided to dwell among us and demonstrate what he had learned. He generously shared his bounty.
Soon the seeds of his labors will be on the verge of rebirth. Dan will watch from a different vantage point, but he will be in the
awakening forever.

My first recollection of Dan was working on an eroding bank at our church. Right away I realized we had like in interests. He liked working in the soil and loved plants. As friends over the years, we learned that our lives had paralleled as Army vets, similar college degrees, and sales. Also, we loved TRACTORS! He was knowledgeable on many subjects. One of his traits was being straightforward which I liked. I am proud to say he was my friend.

Goodbye Dan
We reach an age when our friends begin to disappear. The shock and sadness of a friend’s passing becomes a part of our emotional landscape. Dan always seemed far younger than his years. His loss is still a shock – a seemingly unreal change in the world that takes his sweetness and his strength away from us all. Thinking of Dan is impossible without remembering his wry smile and the glint in his eye.
It always seemed to me that Dan could do anything – especially things directly connected to living and growing. I was always so impressed by all he could do and all that he knew. His life was built of a proud sense of self-reliance as well as his love of simple beauty – deep, loving connections to others. He was a great sportsman and a brilliant builder of all kinds of things. Dan lived his life always fully aware that he was connected to nature in a deeply personal and spiritual way. I think he lived for the passing of the seasons and somehow understood the flow of everything.
Dan understood so much about nature and being! His love and compassion – his toughness and determination, and his great passion and wit drew us all to him. Dan really understood the importance of people as an extension of nature itself. He was an integral part of many different communities – had many, many friends. Always ready to help others but still, always independent and self-reliant. His strength always seemed quiet and loving, but always present.
I always deeply admired Dan, but I never told him. Just never got around to it! I greatly valued his friendship and his kindness. I will miss his amazing warmth and a wonderful presence that could light up the whole room. His great sense of humor, wisdom and grace are gone now. I will remember him with love and affection whenever the wind blows, trees blossom and the birds and flowers return.

I'm really going to miss my Brother in Law. Dan was always fun to engage on most anything or any subject. Our conversations covered everything from beekeeping to winemaking. So many times over the years, I got to enjoy his cooking, just one of his many skills. I especially enjoyed his homemade bread and deer sausage.
Meeting Dan the first time years ago, my wife Elizabeth and I joined Janet and Dan at an Indian Restaurant in Cincinnati. Our meeting was sort of planned at Janet's request (to me) and I knew she wanted us to meet Dan. After Dinner Janet got me off to one side and said something along the lines of, "I really like this guy, what do you think big brother?" I told Janet two things. First I liked him very much. Second, that with all his energy, he reminded me of Mork (Robin Williams) on the show, "Mork and Mindy". In addition, Elizabeth found him interesting and witty and immediately liked him. Later after they became married, we spent many pleasant days with them in Columbus and later, Vilas.
I would be remiss if I didn't mention that Dan was also a loving and supportive husband to my sister Janet. Together, they climbed over a few obstacles and never stopped loving each other.
A very fine gentleman indeed, quite talented and with a fast wit. On my occasional trips to Vilas, I know I'm really going to miss him.
He's on the other side now, along with Elizabeth. Godspeed Dan, until we all meet again.
With love,
Jesse Franklin "Monty" Montgomery.

It's hard to express the loss I feel as I sit here missing Dan... he was more than a dear friend to me, more like an older brother. I happily remember countless afternoons and dinners with Dan and my dear friend Janet, almost always leaving with a tasty take-home bag or carton, but more importantly, I always left feeling a little more hopeful and a little more happy about the world, due the enthusiasm for life and the excitement for almost everything that Dan seemed to radiate. I suppose that the friendship and love I felt and got from Dan will eventually crowd out the loss of my dear friend... I hope. I miss you and your smile, buddy.

Long obituary, yes, but still doesn't cover all the things Dan was! Such as brave, resilient, innovative, quirky-- well, just open the dictionary at any page and you will find another side of Dan. Though I never got to know him as well as others did, I will miss him, and especially miss seeing him at Janet's side. What a huge hole that must leave! You know that we are all here to help, sweet Janet.
I will always remember the tender pictures of Dan with Janet when she was sick and undergoing difficult treatments. How great, to have such a loving and supportive person to help see her through!

Dan was energy plus. I don’t know how his ever busy mind could calm down enough to sleep. His knowledge seemed unlimited as he knew something about everything. He was one of a kind. It is only fitting that he didn’t linger around unable to do the things he loved. He was a good man who lived to the fullest. Many good memories involving Dan and Janet. Sailing on Watauga, eating out, going to movies…..Goodby Dan. Fly high our friend.

Janet, I am so very sorry for your loss. One of my favorite memories is my visit with you and Dan in your home. I still tell folks about my first delightful encounter with rhubarb pie while I was there. Both you and Dan were the perfect, most gracious hosts and I left very happy for you because you were so happy and content. It was plain to see the love you and Dan shared and I loved how he so obviously adored you. Though I, of course, didn’t know him well, the impression was that he was a sweet and sensitive soul. I know you will miss him terribly.

Oh, I agree with Cath that I love this sort of nuanced tribute and am so glad to have these glimpses into Dan's well-lived life! The quote from his nephew that Dan was a "perfect storm of unlimited energy and Wikipedia" is simply perfect! What an honor it is that I have been in community with Dan to see this storm up close. Witnessing the "passion and gratitude" in his love for you, Janet - and in your love for Dan - has been a truly beautiful experience.
I pray that everyone who loved him will continue to be blessed by his memory, as we were blessed by his life. May his love continue to show up as you adjust to life without him here.

Janet and Dan have been the most wonderful neighbors anyone could ever hope for. Dan taught us so much about living in the mountains and he helped us out in ways big and small more times than we could count. So many times I don’t know what we would have done without him. His wisdom, energy, and good humor were constant. Such a great blessing to our family, such a good man, such a great guy!
