Dear Susan and Frank Family. While I didn't have the opportunity to work with Frank directly at Grace, I was always aware of his wonderful work for Grace and his wonderful welcoming smile. Please accept my condolences and a memorial donation to Grace in his memory. Your in Christ, Roger Bodo

Steve is a special human being. I knew his authoritative voice on the local news long before I joined the Watauga Community Band, where I learned of his deep commitment to both the band and to the broader place of music in this area. Steve was a real workhorse, assuming responsibility for so much that made the Community Band function, as well as church and jazz music providing joy to so many. Both he and his lovely wife, Susan, are very dear to me, good friends with a welcoming spirit, and Susan's loss is hard to imagine. My best wishes and condolences to all affected by Steve's departure.

I will always remember Steve for revitalizing the Watauga Community Band summer band program so that we were a year-round band entertaining the county residents. I will fondly remember how he pretended to not want to play The Sabre Dance at our practices.

What sad news! Steve worked with my mother, the late Edith Carter on her many videos about NC history. He was a talented man in so many ways and so knowledgeable on many subjects. His love of music was always apparent and I enjoyed hearing him perform. Sending condolences to all who knew him. Sincerely, Margaret Carter Martine

Steve enriched our community and brightened up a gray day with his appreciation for music, laughter and the fun of going out into the public to talk Radio. What life and leadership he brought to the High Country with his leading the Community Band. I am so sorry to hear of his passing and send my deepest condolences to his family. May you rest in Peace, Steve.

Steve was such a loving, funny, great guy!! He worked really hard and encouraged people to play, sing, and listen to music. He was a bright spot in Boone and Blowing Rock! I'm heartbroken for Susan and the family. Knowing Steve was a joy and a blessing to my life and the lives of so many in our community!! He left big shoes to fill!!

Steve was a tireless and generous soul who gave so much to those of us who love to play music. We will always remember his witty introductions to the songs that the Watauga Community Band played throughout the late Spring, Summer, and early Fall. I remember on one occasion, an uninvited and over-eager spectator joined in with the band on our rainmaker instrument. He got quite carried away and members of the audience at the Blowing Rock gazebo looked quite concerned. Steve was so patient with the fellow that he defused what might have turned into a more tense confrontation.
His devotion to his various bands was remarkable, with one of his cars delegated to transporting music, chairs, music stands, speakers, and other items for one band, and the other car fully loaded for a different band.
Steve was also quite devoted to honoring the veterans of our military service and honoring their sacrifices and contributions. He organized the community band's appearances at veteran's events on their days of commemoration for many years.
We cannot quite imagine the community band or Watauga County without Steve's guiding presence and truly miss him already and owe him so much. Please, Susan let us know if there is anything we can do to help you during this incredibly difficult time.

15+ (!!) years ago, on a trip to the mall to buy a new pair of shoes, I find a small band tucked away in an unused storefront. Standing at the front of that band was Steve. Through the next several years, we participated in many projects together within the Watauga Community Band, the Swing Set Jazz group, various side ensembles, church services, and a good old-fashioned rock band or two.
The mark of a true leader is the communities they create. Between the Kiwanis, church, music, and too many other endeavors to name, Steve worked tirelessly to create a sense of community everywhere.
He will definitely be missed.

I sat with Steve in the newsroom once. His police scanner was popping. The Sheriff's Office or some local PD would call his phone. I think the funeral homes even called him.
He had developed all his contacts so well that he didn't even have to call except for follow up. He had a massive master file of stock local images that fit almost any story on the Go Blue Ridge website. He had images of every shoulder patch of every local official agency.
It was impressive.
