Carolyn was so good to me the summer of 1969 when I baby sat for her three children. She directed my wedding in 1970. I will always remember how kind and loving she was to me. She was also my third cousin.

My heart is broken as I just found out that my long time friend and mentor has passed from this earthly existence. I had talked with her in the spring and knew she was having heath difficulties, but her ever bubbly personality belied the real state of her health. Many years ago I wrote a tribute to Carolyn for a writing class I took at UNCG. My professor suggested I send the essay to Carolyn. It had been years since we had spent any time together, but it afforded us the opportunity to reconnect.
What can you say to explain to others about a woman who saved your life in so many ways. Carolyn and Johnnie were my chaperones to the Miss North Carolina Pageant in 1965 as I had won the wonderful title of Miss Watauga County as a freshman at ASU. From being an abused child and orphan I knew what true love meant. That is what I received from Carolyn. I do not want to make this about me, but must say no one knows the depth of my gratitude for Carolyn. She was a star in God's kingdom who gave from her own purse when it was almost empty to one who had nothing.
I hope Carolyn's family find my tribute among her belongings and realize the depth of my sympathies. You are truly blessed to have had a mother, grandmother, friend, partner, and expert in many things in your mist. May you be comforted in the coming years to know that Carolyn was so loved. I am living in VA now, so I will be unable to attend Carolyn's service. My condolences to her wonderful family. I knew Carolyn through my work at Hardin Park School, and we stayed in touch after my retirement. I loved seeing her, as she was such a sweet and lovely person. She was a great juggler of many tasks at her job when she was at Hardin Park, and she was quite amazing at multi-tasking. She battled several health issues over the years with strength and determination. I will hold on to all the great memories that I have of her. I am sorry that I will be unable to be at her service.

Carolyn Greene Austin was one of a kind. Being the youngest in a very large family of mostly men I’m sure was quite a challenge. She took a lot after my great grandfather Jud. Independent and hard working her entire life. My funniest memory of Carolyn was at my parents planned 50th wedding anniversary dinner. I had called at about 6:15 am to funeral home thinking I would leave a message about when we would be meeting and she had calls forwarded to her home. I was so surprised when she answered and we had a great conversation that early in the morning. I appreciate Carolyn checking on her brother and my grandfather and looking out for him. Her enduring smile will be missed by all who knew her. Rest In peace my friend. I’m sure all your loved ones are glad your home.

Sweet, sweet Carolyn. I remember her so well from way back in school, how nice she was , and also in recent years. She never failed to ask about my family and about me. She will be greatly missed. May God comfort you during this very difficult time.
