We retired educators will continue to remember Mrs. Austin as a beautiful lady who inspired so many students and fellow educators. She made a difference in their lives, from her career at Appalachian State University to her volunteer work at the soup kitchen. As you recall special moments, we, too, will treasure our memories of Mrs. Austin as she served as a mentor to us and to our APP students. Her legacy will remain with us as we cherish the life of this outstanding educator. ~~Caldwell County Retired School Personnel

I am saddened to read of the passing of Happy Austin. She served as my advisor and certainly made a difference in the education of this "non-traditional" student with two elementary age children. Due to her guidance I was able to successfully complete my degree in 3 school years; she opened doors, guided, coached, encouraged and was a powerful cheerleader. Blessings to your family.

I am sorry for your loss. Ms. Austin was my advisor at ASU when I was lucky enough to be in the Senior to Sophomore program. She guided and advised me flawlessly, which allowed me to graduate with a 5 year degree in 5 semesters. She was VERY good at her job and performed her job with a pleasant attitude and always a smile. She was a treasure.

Myrtle was one of my first childhood friends. We went all the way through school together and continued to meet annually with others who were Huntersville School alums. My heart is broken. Margaret Basinger (Chuck)

There are no words to express our grief at the unexpected passing of Happy Austin. We met in the Sunday School class of our pastor, Wade Dellinger, after Don and Happy both retired and moved into Don’s home place. Our friendship grew through the years and was such a blessing. I cannot imagine not being able to call her - I will miss our long conversations. Rest In Peace, precious friend.

Heartfelt sympathy offered to Don, Hope and family. Happy loved all of you so very much. You were constants in her conversation. I know that you will always miss her. I know that I will. She was my single, best connection to my years at ASU. We worked in the same office and shared many good times together. Happy was very insightful and always thoughtful in her considerations of others. She did not suffer fools gladly.
