Art and Anne, of Sackville, New Brunswick, Canada, are the couple who swapped jobs and houses with Ernie and Shelby in 1982-3. We have warm memories of that year, meeting the Lanes, and the follow up visit they did here about 10 years ago! Our condolences to all the family. He was a lovely man!

I am not able to attend the memorial, but wanted to express my condolences to the Lane family, especially Shelby and Preston. Ernie was obviously a dedicated man of many interests and talents, who along with Shelby, made a positive contribution to this community- and will be missed by many.

Dear Keith and family,
Bless your hearts! You are in my thoughts and prayers. My dad went home to be with Jesus in 1997. Cherish your memories. Lean on the Lord and trust in HIM! I share with your my life verses: Jeremiah 29:11-13 & Proverbs 3:5-6. God bless each of you. May the Holy Spirit Comfort you.

My sincerest condolences to Shelby and Ernie's family.
Ernie was among the first people I met when I joined the math dept at Appalachian in '86. He was always ready to help a new faculty member "learn the ropes". Ernie epitomized the scholar-teacher and provided a great example to us all. He was a special fellow who will be long remembered.

Ernie Lane was one of the kindest men I have ever met , when I moved to North Carolina and met him thru my sister ( his daughter in law ) he was quick to make us feel comfortable , we were fond of Easter dinners knowing he and his wife would be there where you could find my children chatting happily with Ernie while I discussed books with his wonderful wife ! My heart goes out to Shelby Keith & Shelly and Preston and Li .... RIP Ernie you were a wonderful man and your legacy will live on in your sons !
