Meryl was a force of nature—a mountain woman through and through. She shared stories about how her mother made crosses and stones for the children and family in the Guy-Combs cemetery and now she, too, rests there. I worked with Meryl on her novel, Autumn Bends the Rebel Tree. She shared her heart and fierce love for her family and the mountains they called home. Rest In Peace, sweet Meryl. You honored your ancestors and loved and doted on your family of children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren. I learned so much about perseverance, hard work, and ingenuity from you. I will miss your words of wisdom and your practical, no-nonsense nature. The world is a lesser place without you, but the heavens will rejoice.

I remember Merle very well. I read much of her poetry and shared many of those in the Watauga Med. Ctr. news letter many years ago. She always seemed to be happy and enjoyed her work and, especially writing poetry. The poetry just flowed from her mind. I will always remember her and her talent.

To Merle's family. I am, so sorry, for your loss. She was a beautiful lady and I enjoyed talking, with Merle, when I'd go, to the cafeteria. And I enjoyed reading her poetry. Such a talented and humorous lady. God's grace and strength, as you mourn Merle's loss.

My Aunt Merle was an amazing woman! She had beautiful smile and wonderful laugh! She spoiled me over 60 years ago when she first fed me her famous biscuits and gravy. What a treat that was! My children and grandchildren loved Aunt Merle from the very first time they ever met her. She had a way of making you feel right at home. We are happy to have a copy of her book and will always remember her telling us some her great stories when we would stop by for a visit. We will surely miss her when we visit NC. We thank God for her, and pray that God will bless her loved ones during this time of mourning.
Much Love,
Bob Weaver and Family
