Obituary of Charles Wheeler Shewbridge

Charles W. Shewbridge III (Chuck), 78, of Blowing Rock, NC passed away on Thursday, February 3, 2022. Born March 1, 1943 in Richmond, VA, he was the son of the late Charles and Dorothy Shewbridge. Chuck was a retired Bellsouth financial executive. He started the tax department at Bellsouth, and ran it for 18 years. He was a leader in the tax and finance field throughout his career, and served on the Board of Directors for The Tax Executive Institute for 3 years, including serving as President from 1999 to 2000. In social circles Chuck was known as the "Southern Gentleman" for his quiet, gentle and kind ways. Chuck had a love of the water that he learned from his parents, and in his younger years you would find him with his wife Joanne (Jo), and their three sons, spending their weekends on the Rappahannock River and Chesapeake Bay. He was also an avid golfer. Chuck was preceded in death by his brother Steven. He is survived by his wife of 44 years Joanne G. Shewbridge; his sons Chip and Michael and stepson Tony; 4 grandchildren; and his siblings Carol, Ken, Connie and Doug. A memorial service will be held at Saint Bridget Catholic Church in Richmond, VA at 11:00 am on Tuesday, March 1, with a reception to follow.
