Virgil
My first recollection of Virgil was at the Community College about 1972. The photos I have seen thus far haven’t shown the great head of black, shoulder length curly hair accompanied by huge mutton chop sideburns. Tshirt, bell bottom trousers, and birks completed his outfit.
The two of us spent the next couple of years in friendship. Bud Mayes encouraged us in the drama department. Virgil was one of the card players in “The Odd Couple”, I believe he also starred in “Man of LaMancha”, worked in “The Lion in Winter”. Don’t know if this is a true story, but it is a story.
The best part of that time was not the acting and play production, but the after…the parties. We all relished that time I believe, and Virgil could instigate some hilarious events. Mabel Callahan hosted a number of events and kept us all safe. I shall keep the secrets, just trust me when I say we had a lot of fun!
As with all things, time marched on, we both married, started careers, and lost contact. Virgil taught my children, Ben and Maggie, and I saw him on occasion at Wilkes Central when Ben was an issue. Virgil showed me the secret smoking den for teachers.
One summer, he and William Clark painted our house. A brutal summer and no shade caused me to pack a cooler of beer for them to ease the heat. One day returning from work, I pulled around back to the garage and there slashed on the door was painted “NEED MORE BEER”. I dutifully complied.
Gotta remember him from those days, the wry smile, the always cigarette, the nervousness, the humor…all a part of a guy I remember with a smile. Ride the cosmos, Virgil, I hope to catch up with you someday.
