Prayers to the family, growing up in First Baptist Church would not have been the same without the Miles family.

Larry and I are so sorry for your loss. We came to ASU in 1972. George was a true leader at ASU one of the respected pioneers. The faculty from our era set the stage for generations of solid academics while remaining a “family” THE APPALACHIAN FAMILY. From me to you, I witnessed George as a leader and wonderful person.
My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Sincerely
Anita and Larry Kitchens

The cakes in heaven just got better… good man he was. My late mother Helen Gill especially treasured his friendship (and red raspberries & peppermint angel food cake.)

From donating blood over many years to sharing visits with friends and former colleagues, Dr. Miles shared his kind and gentle ways with many people. My parents held him in high regard, both as a friend and professor. He and my mother worked together for years and visited nursing home facilities regularly to ensure patients there got good care. Boone has lost a good, good man. Condolences to Margaret from the Shook family.

Dear family,
I have sweet memories of Dr. Miles coming into the Clerk’s office to visit with his dear friend, Glenn Hodges, when he was Clerk. Dr. Miles made a chocolate birthday cake for Clerk Hodges each year and Clerk Hodges would share it with the staff. I am so sorry for your loss and you are in my prayers.

I was so sorry to read of Dr. Miles passing. He was one of the most amazing teachers I ever had. He taught me both semesters of Organic Chemistry 1976-77 at ASU. I’m positive I would never have been accepted into Veterinary School in 1981 without his guiding force. I remember being mesmerized by his ability to write out steric structures as fast as one could read them, all while expounding on the complicated chemistry he explained so effortlessly. He actually won teacher-of-the-year one of the years I was at ASU, which is pretty remarkable for an organic chemistry professor! He was kind, helpful, encouraging & always patient with my many questions emanating from the front row. I loved that class & loved him, too. The family should be so proud & lucky to have been connected to him. May you all gain comfort from that.

It was my privilege and pleasure to be a colleague and friend of George for fifty years. I first got to know him in the early seventies when we team-taught a class and he often provided one of his incredible cakes! A gentlemen and a scholar and foremost a caring person, he ranks high on my "special persons" list.

Dr Miles was one of my favorite teachers at Appalachian. I had him for both semesters of Organic Chemistry as well as Biochemistry. His office door was always open and he was always amenable to a good chat about most anything. He always had some sage advice whenever I needed a friendly ear.
One day, he was arguing classical music with a student. He called down the stairs in old Rankin "Mr Questell, what is the best of Beethoven's symphonies?" I hollered back up the stairs "the ninth, not even close!" He replied "Ah, a kindred spirit." That made me feel like a million bucks and I never forgot that day.
He was a man of many talents who always baked treats for us on test day. He was an excellent teacher who took a lot of the pain out of organic by his teaching skill.
It was great having seats close behind his for the artist and lecture series each year. We'd always critique the performances over the ensuing days.
Dr Miles just added so much to my college experience both in the classroom and outside of class. I'm sure he will be remembered fondly by the hundreds of students he taught and to whom he was a friend.
