On behalf of the Watauga County Public Library and the library board, I wanted to express our condolences and sorrow to Roberta and her family for the loss of Sandra Hagler. Unfortunately, I did not have the pleasure of meeting her but know of the wonderful things she did for the community!
May God lift your family up in prayer during this difficult time.

To Cathy and family…
Of course I was heartbroken to hear that Sandy had passed away. I am so sorry for all of you as I know that she meant so much to her family. Growing up in the neighborhood, all of our moms were more like sisters to each other… so that made her family to me. Sandy, Louise and Lil looked out for each other and their bond was extraordinary…She had a special fondness for my sons and most recently, my grandson. I will never forget her! She will be missed! We love you and will continue to pray for you and the entire family.

Sandra always had a smile and an encouraging word for me in the hallway while we worked at the health department. She faced challenges head on and lived by example. I already miss her. May God comfort the family during this difficult time.

My condolence to Tony and all the family. I knew Tony best of all as I worked with him. He was a great cook and very intelligent man. He talked of his family and I remember them all fondly. Although I was not around them, I remember them and remember Sandy and how good she was to her sister and the many lives she touch. I am so sorry for your loss. She touched many lives and leaves a beautiful legacy. I can remember hearing her and Louise singing and what beautiful voices they had. I remember their Mother, Daddy and sisters and Big John. My condolence to all and she will be missed. I am sorry for your loss, sorry you are hurting. Our love and prayers. Donna and Glenn Hicks

Sandy was Junaluska's historian. She was a founding member of the Junaluska Heritage Association in 2011, and led the History Group that documented many past residents in the community. Her knowledge was invaluable in putting together the recent book of oral histories: "Junaluska: Oral Histories of a Black Appalachian Community." She also found many of the photographs in the book. Her research produced the list of names for the granite marker in the Historic Black Cemetery of Boone acknowledging the 65 burials in mostly unmarked graves. She was passionate about the history of her community and her people. We have lost a treasure of knowledge, and I have lost a friend.

We are so very sorry to hear of Sandra's passing. Her knowledge and contributions to the Digital Watauga Project were of utmost importance to our mission. While we know she will be dearly missed, we will treasure the fact that her work with the Junaluska Heritage Association will live on for future generations to enjoy and better understand the history of this unique community. Warmest regards from the team at The Digital Watauga Project.
