Joyce will be missed greatly by her friends in the community. She had a special way of making people feel welcomed and cared about. I will always remember how she would sit on her porch and greet neighbors walking by, often times inviting them into her home for conversation. She was a lovely person and kind spirit. Sending much love to her family....

Dear Cathy,
We were sorry to hear of the passing of Joyce, John and I have have spoken of her often. One very rainy Sunday morning John and Joyce happened to be walking into church at the same time. Joyce turned to John and asked if he would like to share her umbrella. That seems like such a small gesture of kindness, but to us it was so much more. Joyce's kindness was driven solely by her desire to love. Simply. She will always hold a special place in our hearts. We are grateful for her life and are sorry for your loss. She will indeed be missed.
Love always,
Jennifer Whittington

Cathy,
Your mother was a wonderful lady. My fond memory of her goes back to my childhood, she was the only redhead I had ever seen and I thought her hair was beautiful. She was always very kind to my mother and came to visit her many times over the years after Uncle Bob's death.
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your children and grandchildren, I know you will all miss her dearly.
Peace, love to you,
Virginia Chapman(Greene)

I was so sorry to hear of your mother's passing. I graduated WHS in 1969 and enjoyed being in her Home Economics
class for 2 years. She was so very supportive of me during my senior year when my mother was ill, and a great
encourager to me as I went on to major in Home Economics at ASU. I always loved running into her in the community,
and talking with her. Proverbs 31 comes to mind when I think of her. My thoughts and prayers are with you and
your family. Dianne Clawson Brown

Cathy,
I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your mother. I got to know Joyce when I would visit my Daddy at night. I would stay sometimes late after Daddy was asleep or just stop by late. Several times Joyce would be awake sitting by the desk and I would visit with her. I told her she was a night owl like me. She was so sweet and a joy to listen to. I hope you got to spend some time with her.
Blessings to you and your family. Colleen and the Carlton family.

What an amazing woman. 2 Corinthians 5:8 tells us that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Joyce met with joy her Heavenly Father and her beloved Bob, who had gone to make a place for her. She will be missed but we know she is rejoicing in heaven and therein lies our comfort.

Cathy,
I have such sweet memories of Ms. Joyce. I was in her Home Economics class at Cove Creek High many years ago. She taught me much about sewing and cooking and I loved it. I told her she was a great influence on my decision to go into business as Betty’s Drapery and Design and I was honored to make draperies and other design items for her home later. She was a great lady. Love and prayers for you and all of your sweet family.

Cathy and family, I am so sorry for your loss. Joyce was a special lady. She was always a welcoming friend and neighbor to the Schrum family. I remember a lovely afternoon walking around ASU campus as Joyce told us stories of her days there. She also gave one of my children some of the best pieces of advice/wisdom I think she ever got. And her delicious cakes! She was a gem of a person and I look forward to seeing her again in our eternal home. Jenny

Joyce was also a devoted neighbor. She greeted everyone when she was walking or just being in her yard or sitting by the front door. She loved her family. I feel so fortunate to have known Charlotte and Joyce and to have heard their stories of growing up in Sutherland, of Boone and Appalachian, and their deep connection to one another. I can hear Joyce’s voice now. Peace to you Cathy, your children, Barbara, and Charles.

Bob and Joyce rented me their basement apartment in August of 1963 when ASTC was exploding with students and I literally had no other options. They treated me like a member of the family and when I proposed to my junior ASTC wife they were like family to me entering into the plans with enthusiasm and support and welcoming us both to the greater Sutherland family. What a delightful person and rich contributor to the life of Boone, not to mention the family she cherished so dearly !

Dear Cathy -
I'm so very sorry to learn of the news of Aunt Joyce's passing. I know it's been a long time, but I so fondly remember visiting North Carolina and coming to visit your mom and dad at their lovely home. I know they were so very proud of you, and your beautiful children.
I would love to be able to get your address, my dad, Paul is not able to travel now and lives in assisted living here in Wisconsin, but he learned about her passing through Uncle Johnny.
We want to send a card, and I would love to catch up with how all of you are doing and what your children (now grown) are all up too!
Much love,
Renee(Davis) Anderson
