Dan was an umpire in the Watauga County softball league, which I played in. He was a great guy and we always enjoyed his mild-mannered demeanor and dedication the game. He will be missed.

Dan and my father was great friends for many of years. I loved Dan. My father worked for him at Smyre Mill for years. Dad and Dan always had a great time together. I remember every time I would see Dan he always had a smile on his face and would always make me smile. My father was Boyce Rimmer, he passed away 6 years ago. I know in my heart you two will rejoice in that heavenly land. To Dan's family my sincere condolence go out to each and every one of you. I pray God will be with you all during this hard time. I was saddened to learn of Dan's passing. He was a good friend and longtime business associate. As a business professional he always treated everyone with dignity and respect and insisted that everyone else do the same. He never met a stranger and delighted in helping others with no expectation of anything in return..... except a smile or laugh at one of his corny jokes or outlandish outfits. His life's mission was to spread a little sunshine and hope to all the people he met and in all the places he traveled. A job well done! My deepest condolences to Bette and the Family.

I confess to being the proud owner of one of Dan's signature "Stolen from Dan Blair" golf balls. He was a rascal, a joke-teller, a snazzy dresser, a decent golfer, a friend, an example. I cherish his memory.

Dan Blair has been a big part of my life since 1972 when we hired him into our Personnel Department at Smyre Manufacturing in Ranlo/Gastonia. I quickly learned that Dan was a genuine "people person". He added his wisdom, contacts and humor to our efforts to recruit and maintain quality employees including a very successful recruitment program of Vietnam displaced employees. Dan's wife Bette and my wife Jan quickly became lasting friends and we formed a foursome that has lasted for over 48 years! We traveled to many sporting events and had many wonderful vacation trips together. We worked together and played together! Our kids loved the Blairs and looked forward to our being together!
We left Smyre in 1985 and moved to Spartanburg SC where we lived until retirement in 2008. We quickly meshed our Gastonia friends with our new Spartanburg friends and had many interchanges of the two groups which still continue today! Dan and Bette were always favorites of both groups.
The Blairs introduced us to Blowing Rock in 1983 and we made many trips there including house shopping for them. We had many group parties at their Blowing Rock home over the years. Dan & Bette encouraged us to buy into Blowing Rock in 1993 as "part timers". We remained "part timers" at three different venues in Blowing Rock until September 2017 when they helped us become "Full Time Residents" of Blowing Rock. We have since had almost daily luncheons and lots of "side trips" with them. There have not been many days that Dan and I did not have a contact, even if it was only to "check in" or see who had the lower temperature the night before! He enjoyed "out doing me" so of course he usually won that contest too!
Our last lunch together was on his 89th Birthday on Saturday September 5, 2020. We took him to his favorite eating place, Suba's in Mountain City, Tennessee. The next day, Sunday September 6th Dan fell in his driveway and broke his leg. He was hospitalized that day and then began a sad series of days that lasted over three months ending with his death December 12!
Dan was and always will be in my mind and heart as an inspirational friend that I always knew I could depend on! I will miss my Buddy, Friend and Confidant! "The Moon" loves you Dan Blair! (Jim Mauney, 12-15-20).

Dan was one of the nicest and most gracious person I’ve ever met! I worked with and assisted Dan in several national softball tournaments starting in the early 1990s. He taught me a lot about the game and was always willing to share his knowledge. He became a North Dakota State University Bison football fan after he and Bette came to North Dakota for a national tournament. I along with so many others became lifelong friends with Dan! Sending prayers for the whole family! Rest in peace my friend! Michael Wolf, Bismarck, North Dakota

One of the finest, if not the finest person I have ever known. Dan made this world a better place for many people, I’m so blessed to have been on that list. Our loss is no doubt Heaven’s gain. Until we meet again my friend thank you for being such a huge part of my life. Dan and i were friends and softball promoters for over 50 yrs. He was a one of a kind person with a positive word for everybody. People like him do not come along very often. We shared so many good memories and experiences all over the country. We worked a lot of softball tournaments together and Dan made them all fun no matter the circumstances. Anywhere we went Dan knew all the good places to eat. Dan will be greatly missed and I am thankful he left this world a better place. Tony Laws
