I had the good fortune to coach with Joe for two years at Methodist college. He was a great teacher and mentor to me and I learned a tremendous amount about defensive basketball from Joe Miller. He was a good friend and I just found out today that he had passed away. God bless you guys. I am thankful I had Joe Miller in my life.

Joe and his family have been our neighbors living on the Watauga River for as long as I can remember. Joe was a gentle soul with only kind words and a positive attitude. An avid and loyal sports fan you would think he was an active coach at Appalachian State.
Beth and I will miss this gentle giant. RIP Joe.

Coach Miller was a big influence on me picking Methodist as a place to attend college. As a coach, he stressed a disciplined defensive approach to the game. Practices were tough, challenging but yet rewarding. He was a mentor to all of us who played for him. His prowess as a PE teacher was demanding yet fair. My thoughts and prayers go out to Coach Miller's family, friends and loved ones.

Coach Miller was one of the first people I met when I arrived on campus in the fall of 1985. I immediately got along well with him especially knowing he was familiar with my hometown since I grew up 45 minutes from BG where he attended college. He was a friendly, great guy. After graduation, I wondered where he had gone and his name had again come up with several of my classmates. I am saddened to hear that he passed. He will be greatly missed. RIP Coach Miller.

Joe was my college coach in the late 70's at Methodist. He was a great teacher of the game. All my philosophy of defense is rooted in those practices. Most, if not all of his former players can attest to his passion for teaching defense. He was also a really good teacher in the classroom. I took several of his classes. He was one of the good guys. He never knew this but I came into town years ago and we met up and played some tennis. He whipped me pretty good. Sue will appreciate that. And that inspired me to begin playing more seriously and consistently. I was out for revenge. I did get a lot better, but sadly we never played again. He will be missed.

I remember the preparation he demonstrated for his teaching and coaching. His adaptive physical education class was one of the best. Coach would always take time to chat and really listened.

We all loved Joe at Deer Valley Racket Club and we all send our condolences to Sue and to the family. Joe loved tennis and continued to play after his stroke while in a wheel chair. Joe always had a kind word to say and everyone had the upmost respect for him. Deer Valley Racket Club lost a dear friend and he will always be remembered and respected. Sue, please visit when you can.

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Joe. He was always warm and caring. My Father coached football with Joe's brother Jim and recommended I look at Ohio Northern. One of the best decisions of my life. Joe was coaching all 4 years of the years that I played basketball for ONU. He was definitely a competitor. He could play a tough game of one on one. I will always remember him fondly.

My sincere condolences to Aunt Sue, Andy, Patrick & Annessa, Kennedy and Grayson. I only have wonderful memories of my Uncle Joe and Aunt Sue and my cousins: visiting them in: Ada Ohio, Edgerton Ohio, Ohio camping trips, Fayetteville, North Carolina Beaches, and Boone. One special memory comes to mind when my family visited them in Boone ~ Uncle Joe greeted us as we were pulling into their driveway, he them opened his garage door, which was completely filled with cases of Miller Beer. He is such a joyful person!

Our deepest condolences to Sue, Andy,Patrick and all who new and loved Joe. I’ll always remember Joe as a friendly, active and humble man. He was so passionate about the sports he coached and watched subsequently. He walked his dogs in the neighborhood each day and it was a joy to see how happy it made him. Now his son Andy carries on that activity. We truly feel blessed to have known Joe. He fought the good fight. Joe will be truly missed in our close neighborhood.

Joe was a great person as well as a special friend. He was always concerned for the other person rather than himself. He was very competitive, but fair, straight forward but not abusive, willing to give but sought nothing in return. I learned a lot from Joe, not because he taught, but because of the example he set. He will be surely missed, but we all believe that he rests in a better place.

Joe was a great basketball and baseball coach -- and a great friend throughout my life. His smile and his energy were uplifting and contagious. Will miss him at our Polar Bear get-togethers, but his legend will live on! Thanks, Joe. We love you...always.

So many sweet thoughts of Joe.
When we were neighbors he was "The Cookie Man" It was our dogs' friendship that brought us mere humans together. Joe always has a treat for the pups in his pocket. He has a quiet humility.
Favorite Memory: We borrowed a sled from the Millers one winter. Rather than put it in his truck, I can see him ( at 70) running to jump on that sled and guide it home...all the way down our very long driveway. Then he had to carry it home.
( we fed him pie for breakfast that day) he said " Don't let Sue Know."
Joe, you continue to inspire so many.
I Love you

David and I became good friends with Joe and Sue through my own parents. My parents spent many great times with Joe and Sue up on the mountain in Sugar Grove, NC. Dave and I have so many wonderful memories of getting together with Joe and Sue for drinks, meals, happy hours, hanging at the river and phone calls. The photo we are sharing is one of us last year at the App State football game last year. The day was cold and rainy, but that did not stop Joe from going to watch his beloved Mountaineers.
Sadly, we did not even catch a glimpse of Joe or Sue this year because of Covid. We missed them both so much.
Joe was the kindest most soft spoken guy and would do absolutely anything he could for us if we needed him. This world is definitely a little less bright without him in it. I know that he is taking his place in eternal life, and his faith was strong.
Dave and I will always have our fond memories of him and we never forget. We loved you, Joe.

Many memories of times spent with Joe and Sue in Fayetteville and in Boone. A wonderful trip to Alaska in 2007 was a highlight. Rest in Peace Joe, your battle is over.
