My first teaching position after graduating from Appalachian was in Business Education at Lenoir High School. In addition to being a dedicated teacher, Mary Jo was a colleague, a mentor, and a friend. I am long retired and look back fondly at those two years at a fine high school.

Dear Family, I did not know Mary Jo, but I wish I had! Everyone speaks highly of her, and I would have loved to hear her memories of The Patterson School for Boys. The School was coed by the time I came as a teacher in 1983, but I've met a lot of the older Alumni. What years was she at Patterson? If I know any from those years, I will let them know. My condolences to you at this time. May the Lord give you comfort. Janet Spoon

I thought the world of Mary Jo the first time I met her she welcome me to the family and I have loved her every since. Rebeca and I would always come running after the sweet potatoes she always told us where they were and then give the left overs to us. Rest in peace great lady God Bless, heaven just got a little sweeter. Prayers for her daughter and her family. Sarah Moretz

Jo was a very special lady. I taught with her at HMS and we had some great times. We sometimes confused a student by sending notes to each other that we had written in shorthand! We thoroughly enjoyed watching a student try to figure out what was going on. My thoughts and prayers are with her special family.

Dear Austin Family,
I knew Mary Jo through Steve and Reba and remember she was a very outstanding citizen and should be complimented on the number of years she spent in education in Caldwell County Schools. My now deceased husband, Harold, and I both retired from the same school system and had opportunities to see Mary Jo at meetings. She was dedicated to serving the children of the county and will be remembered for that.
She will be missed!!!
Prayerfully yours, Rachel Earley

Mrs. Mary Jo Setzer was my high school teacher, my neighbor, and my friend. I am saddened to learn of her passing. Mrs. Setzer was very special to me. As a student, Mrs. Setzer made me think I could do anything. She certainly helped shape my life.. Rest Well, Mrs. Setzer.
