Pam,
I never knew your mother and never met her; however, on reading this beautifully written obituary, I better understand YOUR tenacity and wonderful spirit. What a life she lived and what a testimony to the unrelenting, hard work of an independent, strong woman. My condolences and thoughts go out to you and your family. Thanks to you and your family for sharing this wonderful snapshot of an incredible life.
May her memory live on,
Kathy Moore

" Make a plate for Kilburn." I don't know how many times I heard your mother's welcoming voice inviting me to make a plate as I came over after some holiday meal. Now, as a grandmother of 3, I know that she must have been dead on her feet, plum tuckered out, and ready to be DONE with the holiday meal. Only now at 61 can I fully appreciate what it took for her to be so hospitable to me. She was always kind and welcoming.
For most of my adolescence and adult life, I have loved and been loved on by the Powell/Leibl family. Celia, my best friend is my rock. I wish you all solace in your grieving and the comfort knowing what a full life your mother lived and the incredible legacy of kindness both of your parents leave behind.

I send my condolences to your family in the passing of Alice Jeffress Powell. I know none of you personally, but through this obituary, I learned much about Alice and the author. In my 71 years, this may be the most well-written, thoughtful obituary I have ever read. She obviously lived a glorious life and passed a lasting legacy to her family, especially the writer of this tribute. This obituary honors your mother in a way few could ever achieve. May God create others such as her and you.

Beautiful words of love and admiration for your mom. I always loved getting to visit with your parents - they were always gracious and engaging and so hospitable. Your mom’s pimento cheese remains one of my very favorites! And some chocolate dipped cookies that I ate at least a dozen of at Becky’s wedding! Love to all y’all. Martha

My mother considered Alice a lifelong friend. I recall the last time they saw one another. It was at St Marks. Although her memory was fading, my mother said "Alice Howell" as they embraced. A striking woman of statue, reminding me so much of her own mother (who was my godmother). My thoughts and prayers are with you and may your many happy memories lift you up at this time. So glad I have these memories and pictures to share! Always loved visiting Aunt Alice in Raleigh, as a child, and Athlone when young and older. Always made me feel grounded to go back to Amherst and hear stories of my family and decedents there. It was really special taking my daughter, named for Aunt Alice's sister, Mary Louise Howell Johnson, who was my grandmother. I know they're united in heaven today. Peace be with her family and friends.
