You taught me so many things being your nurse. I appreciate what you stood for and how you never backed down from ALS. I gained a family. I loved you so much. You received the ultimate healing on the 5th of July. Many prayers for your entire family. RIP to the greatest man ever

We were sorry to hear of Dane's passing. I'm sorry I didn't get to know him. He sounds like a very accomplished man and a great father and partner for your many years together. Thanks for all you and your family and friends have done to support ALS research. We can only hope for a cure for such a devastating disease. Take care. Our condolences.

Dane and I worked closely during our time together at Wayne State. We received a technology grant and had an article published together. He was a great colleague. I found an article with a picture of the two of us from 1996 when we received the grant. It is a great loss and he will be missed.

I am so sorry! Former librarian colleagues at Central Michigan University spoke highly of him and urged me to look him up, now that he was at ISU. We met and it was a such an exhilarating talk. It turned out his son Will had been in school with my Kegan. I'm so sorry for your loss. Everyone's loss. And much too young!!

Jenny -- After 10 years living near the Blue Ridge mountains in Virginia, I returned to Bloomington-Normal a couple years ago, so I saw this in the local paper. I did know you guys ended up at Appalachian State. I think I only met Dane once during your time in Illinois, but I know how respected he was. I just wanted to send my condolences to you and all of Dane's family and friends. I'm so sorry for your loss, but glad Dane is free of any suffering. Peace to you.

Jenny, I will always remember Dane's quiet nature and quick wit. He was a highly regarded colleague for so many at ISU and App State. His smile and laugh are distinct memories for me. I know he loved you and the boys so very much. I am so glad we were able to visit last year. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I am so sorry to hear of Dane's passing. He was the Associate Dean and Dean of Milner Library while I was taking courses to complete my Graduate Certificate in School Librarianship at ISU. I had several conversations with him about a variety of topics, and enjoyed them all. He was a good leader, but also a good person. I remember him talking about his sons; I believe that they may have been in school with our daughters (Jessi and Dani Fries-Creasey), and he was so very proud of them both.
My thoughts are with you all.

I was so happy when Dane was chosen to become the Dean of Appalachian State’s Library. His professional reputation was outstanding, and he was known for his brilliant teaching and promotion of libraries. His contributions as Dean were significant even as he dealt with ALS. He was a great leader for the Library.
It was a privilege to know Dane. I admired his professionalism, courtesy, humor, and calm spirit. And he was the consummate librarian using his professional skills to advance knowledge and study of ALS.
He will be greatly missed, but his spirit and legacy will be remembered by all who worked with him and knew him.

Dane was a brave man, willing throughout his life to take risks, to learn what was necessary.
In the late 70s, he spent some months visiting mostly-black Baptist churches in the South, to help himself understand "the numinous" in the "joyful noise" of word, spirit, and song. He entered the Peace Corps, not knowing where he would be sent, but hoping he would be of use.
Throughout his professional life, he threw himself into uncertainty, and not only survived but found a path he wanted to take.
When I knew him best -- at the university -- he was searching for meaning, for a larger purpose, for something fundamental about the human condition.
Dane's search for meaning found culmination in his family -- a deeply loved partner, and two fabulous sons -- as well as his work, on helping libraries evolve humanely in the digital era.
With his death, I am left bereft. But he would not want that of me: he would want me to think about what mattered, find an ultimately unattainable goal to strive for, and work hard for it, in the time I had left -- because it would be a goal worth working hard for.
Dane was a kind, true, and stalwart friend, and a man to be admired. We've lost one of our best.

I first met Dane at the science fair at Augustana college Wil and Katie's senior year. I will always remember fondly the visits to Bloomington, the fun restaurants and icecream trips, wedding shower, best wedding ever in Seattle, our walk around the lake in Winston Salem and and awesome brunch following. Whenever I go to Goodreads I will think of Dane since he introduced it to us. In all of our precious times with Dane he was always so friendly and generous and so interested in what I had to say- so present!!
I'm glad I have these happy memories and I feel sad and angry that he had to go through that illness and pass way too early!! Even up til recently he and Jenny had a sense of humor over some sad and funny post from someone with ALS. We love you Dane- you left us too early- we will always remember your courage and your fight. You are an inspiration!!!

Dane's death is a real blow to me. To say he was a mentor is an understatement. His views on information literacy influenced me in such a way as to change the course of my life. His view that being information literate required critical thinking and experiencing life was lived out in his life experiences. He was always there to support and challenge me, to lift me up at my low points and delight in my successes. His selflessness was always evident. I consider him a true friend. My sympathies to all the others who loved him. We are lucky to have known such a thoughtful and caring man. Rest in peace.

Dear Jenny, I am devastated to hear about Dane. He was my friend and confidant in those turbulent high school years. He was always a reasonable strong shoulder to lean on and a friend to listen or to lighten the mood with his great sense of humor. I always marveled at the way his mind worked. This is a devastating loss for you and your boys and a terrible loss for humanity. He was one of the kindest hearts I have ever known and the world will not be the same without him. Please pass my condolences on to your boys and to Stephanie and their parents. Ann Bates Rey, Connecticut

Heaven has gained a beautiful soul and Dane is whole again. My favorite memory of Dane is when he would suggest to an audience of faculty that the best thing we could do for the 21st century library is to remove all the books. They would absolutely lose their shit, forgive the potty mouth. I mean, he would render them apoplectic with the idea. I don’t know if he knew he could needle them and looked for the opportunity. I don’t think so. He was so focused on the needs of students and how the library could better serve them that he just spoke the truth. And I was always disappointed by the faculty who were so arrogant in their own position that they couldn’t hear his commitment to true service. My word! Dane, you are missed! May your family and friends draw comfort from fond memories. God bless.

Sadly, the last time I saw him was at Mike’s memorial. I’m sure they are both in heaven now pain-free and having many lively discussions. My heart is with all of you.

Jenny, I have been so inspired by your family's willingness to share the journey you have been on over the last few years. My heart breaks for you and for everyone that loved Dane. He was indeed a gentle spirit who greatly impacted people who were lucky enough to come in contact with him. I certainly enjoyed the conversations that I had with both of you at church and during Thrive gatherings.
Will and Wesley, I know you both have a deep appreciation for how wonderful your dad was. Thank you for continuing to share his story and his light to the world. You both, just like your dad, will make a huge impact on this world. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to cross paths with your entire family.
From the entire Holliday family, our prayers are with you and we will make a contribution in Dane's name so his courage will leave a legacy for other families facing an ALS diagnosis. Much love to you all.
