Hello family,
I just today was told of Baker's passing. After I retired I lived in TN and missed some important news. I am so sorry. I worked in US Federal Clerk 's Office when Baker was US Marshal. He was a kind and all round American man. I vwas honored to know him. My maiden name is Hollar and when Baker found out he would call me "cuz".

I met Baker through volunteering with the Community Plant Sale a couple of years ago, and he never failed to cheer up the volunteers with his rotten jokes, timely snacks, and especially his 200 watt smile. Baker was the kind of man that gave you faith in humanity. I will really miss him and my heart goes out to his wife and family. Know that we dearly loved him.

Baker, me and my brothers and a bunch of other boys in the same age group grew up in Perkinsville. We all got into a lot of playful mischief together and much of it started across the field from his home at the perkinsville boy scout hut. Elementary school through Appalachian High, he was the same always and will always be a good friend. May peace be with the family and God bless you all.

Baker was always forward looking, positive about all good things and always willing to listen to opinions of others with whom he disagreed. Baker served as my observer/co-pilot during the years when I flew over Federal Land searching for marijuana. I never had a better observer or calmer co-pilot. The irony of this was he could have managed his officers from the ground and not risked the always present danger of flying into a mountain. Not Baker. He chose to lead from the front. Still he remained modest and approachable. He taught me so much about managing others during our time together. I am saddened by his passing, but smile when I remember the years we were together. How on every flight Baker would say, "Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth...."(John Gillespie Magee's 1941 poem, "High Flight"). My world is smaller now, but equally sure Baker is out there somewhere straightening some wrinkles in a cloud for someone.
My sincere condolences for all of Baker's family. Bill Matthews, North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, Retired.

Mr. Baker as I called him will be greatly missed. He helped me tremendously with my education and provided me with opportunities that I would not have had without his help. He always asked my nana about me and kept up with where I was at in my nursing. He was a bright light and his smile and gentle soul will be missed by all who knew him. Praying for your family ❤️ Makenzie Presnell

Baker will always be in my heart. He was a ray of sunshine every single time I saw him, ready with a bright and mischievous smile or a tall tale or a trick with Bandit. I will miss him. A more generous soul cannot be found, always reaching out to others with a helping hand. My sincere condolences go out to the family.

It is so hard to say goodbye to Baker. We will very much miss his stopping by sporting a sly grin and leaving a box of bananas & apples for the office or big jar of goodies to raffle in support of a cause he held dear. His love of the outdoors and of conservation was always evident as he would drop in to catch up and talk about fishing or hiking or our latest project. He always had a story and he always left us smiling. Our thoughts and prayers, and tears are with the family as they grieve the loss of a one-of-a-kind man with a heart of gold.

We are devastated to learn of Baker's death. We were the recipients of his roadside visits on many occasions. In fact, it's been less than two weeks that he stopped by our house with a bottle of that famous Pig Whiz....and said he had a jar of chutney to bring me. He was a great encourager to me and always complimented my writing. He loved roaming the back roads and always hollered or honked his horn at us on his way to visit his friend Scott Stanbery. We are certainly going to miss that old boy.

May the peace and comfort of God surround the family at this difficult time. My heart aches because a dear friend has gone too soon. Baker was a light at the USFS/Asheville and everybody just love him. I will never forget the day when he and his brothers came into the office to meet the Resource Clerks. Wow! what a time; or the day he brought muffins to the office (hot, right from the oven). A special guy and a special friend. Sleep, my brother, we will meet again!

Baker was a personal friend and a dedicated friend to all law enforcement. He was especially a friend to the SBI. I shared many days with Baker searching for marihuana in the mountains of North Carolina. Baker was always working not just observing. He was on the ground or spotting in our air plane. Baker never had a bad day and always had an uplifting spirit.
He will be missed.

Baker possessed the most playful and generous soul. I am forever grateful to have the privilege to know him and receive his delicious jellies, relishes, and his world famous Pig Whiz. I'll never forget his joke telling with Bandit acting out the parts: rolling over and playing along - on Baker's call.
Baker will be greatly missed and his fun spirit cherished. We can all learn from Baker - to loosen up and have a little fun and kindness.
Sincerely, Ann Arnold

About 13 years ago we were privileged to build a house for Baker and Dian. He quickly became a friend to all of us on the crew and remained so to this day. On several occasions over the years Baker visited our jobsite, many times to bring food for everyone. We all reported it to each other whenever we would see him about town because we were so happy to see our friend. He will be missed.
