I just lit the candles on my Advent wreath and gave thanks to God for Don. I am so sorry to learn of his death. He brought faith and encouragement to his work, and to those who were able to work with him. His death is a loss for this world.

Don and I graduated with our Ph.D. degrees from Claremont the same year, although our fields of specialty meant that we had little contact with each other. Over the years, especially when he was serving as a deployed staff member for the ELCA, we several times were at the same meetings and appreciated catching up with each other. I just learned about Don's death in the August 2020 issue of Living Lutheran and want to share my condolences during this time of great loss.

I met Chaplain Just during Advance Infantry Training, in Spring of 1968 on my way to Vietnam.
He helped this Army draftee get through a lot, facing such future uncertainty at age 22.
Later, after arriving in-country, Chaplain Just located me at base camp and we met for prayer.
I will never forget it!
(A couple weeks before I was able to come home, 242 U.S. solders were killed in
one week, over Memorial Day weekend, May 28 through June 3 1969.)
Later on on the 80s, I met pastor Just guest preaching at a Holy Trinity in Charlotte and we had lunch.
I recall my wife & I attended his wedding.
Chaplain Just helped me so much in such an uncertain time for both of us.
Prayer Works, Chaplain Just!

To: Don’s wife:
Don’s brother Myron sent me an e-mail last night,
Telling of your husband Don’s recent death. I’ve known the Justs for over 60 years and once competed against Don in a 4-H speaking contest. (He won!) My late father-in-law, Vernon “Ace” Exner, was Don’s high school football coach. As you mourn. Please know that Heaven had a place waiting for his soul soon after his April 25th death. I intend to send his obituary to my Vietnam war comrade Chad Covey in Hickory, NC (where Don once lived and ministered). Peace be with you as you mourn his death and celebrate his life.

I remember Pastor Just when I was a student at Lenoir-Rhyne. He had a great sense of humor. He blessed us at our nursing capping ceremony. You will be missed Chaplain Just. Praying for the family.

I always enjoyed seeing Chaplain Just on campus at L-R. He was such a calming presence. I can still see him walking the dogwood path talking to students on his way to the Cromer Center. He touched many people with his love for Christ.

I knew Don in Austin when he served Messiah and later when he was deployed staff. He was so very bright, personable, and a good pastor. Both of us were surprised to meet again at a synod assembly in Hickory. Rest eternal grant Don, O Lord, and let Light perpetual shine upon him. Amen.

Pastor Just taught my husband and I while we attended Lenoir- Rhyne. He was a wonderful professor who had a great presence and kind spirit. He once called my husband and I a "matched pair" we have referred to ourselves that way over the years many times. He was a kind person with a remarkable legacy. Sending prayers for you all as you grieve this loss.
