Gary was one of my 7th grade teachers. A good man. He was a good teacher as well as a strict one. He kept his students in a straight line. Noone wanted one of his prayer meetings. I remember his talks about amateur radios and his singing. I've often wondered what happened to him thru the years ,he left an impression on his students to try hard. My condolences to his family and friends who will miss him dearly.

Mr. Hartley was my 7th grade Science teacher. He is the reason that I began to enjoy science. I loved his thorough discussions, his hands-on activities, and his personal knowledge of that subject. Most of all, I appreciated him easing me out of my squeamishness in order to be able to conduct the labs. He was very patient with me because at the period of time I was quite shy. He will always remain one of my favorite teachers of all time. He truly cared about what he was teaching. He cared about his students. He greatly impacted many of his students and their lives. I am a teacher now, and he is part of that reason. I will always have fond memories of him.
To his family, I send my deepest condolences. Mr. Hartley might not be with us, but he is still within our hearts. Prayers to you all.

Mr. Hartley and his True Blues. I will never forget. He wore a tie every day. He was one of those teachers that made me want to become a teacher. He also took me camping a few times with Chris Clawson. He was a unique guy and very smart. He dropped by my parents house when I was there about five or six years ago. It had been 25 years since we seen Gary Wayne. He had been living out west for most of that time. He was a great guy! I will never forget you Mr. Hartley!

We knew Gary by way of my brother-in-law, Jim Hartley, Gary and Jim were brothers. To us, Gary was a true gentleman and so versed in many subjects that you wanted to have long conversations with him. My husband and I stayed in touch with Gary through Christmas cards, and we enjoyed getting cards from him. To his family, we express our sincere sympathy. Larry & Joyce Huggins

Mr. Hartley was my 7th grade science teacher. He use to pick me up and take me to school. I spent several days with him working around his house in Gamewell. In 1997 I got my Amateur Radio license and talked with him on 2 meters once when he came back to North Carolina. He was a great teacher who encouraged me to sign my name with style and flare. Mr. Hartley made a profound impact on my life. May his family be comforted by his great influence in so many young people's lives.

Mr. Hartley was my 7th grade science teacher. That year he took me and two of my friends under his wing to help us earn our Amateur radio licenses. He took us to Ham Fests, showed us all his gear, and even loaned us equipment to fuel our interests. He made us math and science nerds feel like we were okay.
I joined the Marine Corps 5 years later and became a manual Morse intercept operator because of Mr. Hartley. Eventually I went to NC State and became an engineer because of Mr. Hartley. Now, 40 years past the 7th grade, I am a high school science teacher because of Mr. Hartley. To say he impacted my life would be an understatement, and I'm sure I am only one of many.
He was a great man and a great teacher. I think of him often. I will miss him.
Grace and peace to all his family and friends.
Keith

Gary was my 7th grade teacher in 1976/77. He was the best teacher I ever had. He loved us students from the core of his heart, and he showed it with tough mindedness and tolerating the things that 7th grade boys think are hilarious.
He was also a friend to my dad and my whole family through Amateur Radio. Several people helped my dad (Tom Schrum) get into ham radio, but Gary took dad under his wing for a time and helped him alot.
I lost contact with Gary after I went to college, but I would think of him every now and again and reminisce with a friend on occasion about how great he was.
