Aw, Susan, I am so sad to hear that Bob has passed. I have such fond memories of him and you and the gatherings at your home on the back side of Appalachian Ski Mountain. I think about watermelon in the creek, the amazing beer can collection ("Old Frothingslosh" remains a favorite reference), and the delightful smile Bob always had on his face.
I recall the group trip to NYC, and Bob stopping by the hotel room to take back some luggage for us in his vehicle so we wouldn't have to carry it all on the train. He knocked and was let in, shown the luggage, and the door locked behind him. It wasn't until we got back to NC that I learned that I had been the one to let him in--sleepwalking, apparently!
I'm thinking of you, and wish I could be there to give you a big hug today. I hope to see you in the near term and give you that hug in person!
love,
Shelley des Islets

My family is saddened to hear of Bob’s passing! I loved to talk to him when he was selling his honey at the market at the Horn in the West. I had an idea who he had learned a few things from but I had made a promise to my Great Aunt not to say anything about her being my Aunt. It was a great joy to know our family connection through my Mrs D. Green. After all these years! May we remember the joy even in those moments of sorrow and know the legacies that Live on because of what the joy of bees brought to so many, not just in product, but in beauty and Learning. Love you all to the moon and Back! Love, Joy and Peace in this time of sorrow!
With love,
The Jackson, Darden, Allen, and Marley Families

My sincere condolences on the loss of your loved one. Though I've never had the pleasure of meeting Papa Cole in person, I've heard many lovely stories about him. Let the planting of this memorial tree serve as a beautiful reminder of the wonderful life he lived and the knowledge he bestowed onto others. Hugs and prayers from my family to yours.

Susan, I am so sad for you. I have very fond memories of Bob from college days. Your students always knew when Bob was coming home from a business trip, because it made you soooo happy. And he always seemed to feel the same way, smiling just because he was happy to come home to you. I am glad that you shared so many years together because I know those memories are dear and will comfort you. I love you Susan. You will be in my prayers, Jeannine Taylor

Dear Cole Family,
I am a retired honey bee scientist with USDA, ARS. Bob and I quickly became friends once we met at EAS meetings. It was always a great pleasure to run into him at a meeting. We had many wonderful discussion about honey bees, beekeeping and life in general. He was one of my go-to people to stay in touch with what beekeepers were doing and answers they needed. Not sure if he was on one of the trips beekeepers made to Venezuela or Mexico to meet Africanized bees firsthand with us, but I'm betting he was. Bob was a lovely gentleman and bright spot in my life. He will be missed by many.
My sincere condolences,
Anita

Susan, I will never forget what a good sport Bob was for us idiot theatre kids vying for attention. He was so steady. I would have freaked out if I had known he worked with John Denver because that's the artist I chose to idolize as I taught myself to play guitar in high school. I always thought I was super-cool because I knew a real-life beekeeper. I bragged that I had honey that came from the world's best beekeeper. More than anything else, I loved the way he loved you for all those years. You two showed us how to have a real relationship with genuine love, good humor, and devotion. My heart breaks for you and the whole family in this time of temporarily saying goodbye. Love you ~ Lee Ann

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of my wonderful Uncle Bob. Our thoughts and prayers go to Aunt Susan and Butchie, Bobby, Billy and their families. We have wonderful memories with Uncle Bob, especially taking our boys around the acres of land up in Todd, teaching them about bees, (up close), showing off his herb garden, and feeding our boys fresh blueberries and fresh apples, right off the trees. He was a kind soul, with a generous heart, and a hearty laugh. We take comfort in our memories, and pray that his family will find peace and comfort in the days ahead.
