I just arrived back in Boone and learned of Susan's passing and am so very sorry. Susan was one of the first people I met when I bought a place here 3 years ago at Echota. Ella, my Golden Retriever loved her too and all you had to say was "Ella let's go to Maw's" and she would run for the car. I will of course be in this week to get all of my goodies but just wanted to let you know how very sorry I am to hear this sad news.

I just learned of Maw's passing. I love Maw. My wife Marnie, also deceased, and my daughter Haley worked for Maw about 15 years ago. We all loved Maw. Stopping by Maw's Produce to visit Maw was always a special treat. I visited her at the Foley Center not that long ago and she looked great. Maw made my life, like so many other's lives, so much better. I will really miss her. Bob Werth

I started working at Maw’s when I was in college and Susan quickly became family. I saw how loved she was day in and day out, people not only stopping by the produce stand for fruits and veggies, but to hug Susan and share what they’d been up to. If she didn’t see someone for a week or two and it was unusual, she’d pick up the phone and call them to make sure they were okay. She cared so much. And, quite frankly, she was a harder worker than 20 year old me- never sitting down or taking a break. I have no doubt that “Maw” is one of the most loved women in the High Country, all because of her amazing spirit, love, and ability to pick out the perfectly ripe tomato. My heart is selfishly broken that she is no longer with us on Earth, but I know she is hiking through the rhododendrons in Heaven watching over us!

Susan and I became friends about 35 years ago when she lived in Savannah. We were joined with three other friends and became a very close group. I love thinking back at all the things we did together. The four of us enjoyed visiting Susan on Sugar Mountain. My condolences to Brooks, Danny, grandchildren and Joe.

I will always cherish the memories of Susan coming in for lunch at FCC. She always had her hot dog made her special way. Some times two but we kept that our secret. Such a sweet kind hearted person....and always smiling. Praying for the family in the days ahead.

Brooks and Danny, I was so saddened to hear of the recent passing of your mother, Susan. I met your mom in the middle seventies working with juvenile offenders. We remained friends throughout our years at DJJ and afterward in retirement. Your mom was an incredible person, who had a way of always putting things in their proper perspective and lending herself to any situation where she felt she could help. She brought her wisdom, compassion and class to everything she did and was respected and loved by those who knew her. I am so grateful for the time I spent with her and Joe in the spring of 2018, as they were parting for their journey to Israel. She will be deeply missed.

Sugar Mountain will not be the same without Susan, but her spirit will live on there. I met Susan in 2009, and had
the joy of living next door to her when she and Joe started dating few years ago. She brought me some dirt back from Israel!
In June I would bring her the large longleaf pine cones from Moore County, N.C. Our birthdays are the same
week in February. She was born in Greenville, S.C. and I was born in Greenville, N.C.!
We will all be together in heaven, and she can handle all the cakes and pies!

Danny, Jackie, Will and Molly, I am so very saddened to hear about the passing of your Mother and Grandmother. Sometimes, we get so caught up in our own lives that we have a tendency to forget about the ones around us. I loved Susan and admired and respected her to the utmost, not only as a business woman, but more, as a loving, delightful and caring person. She made you feel "good" when around her. We spoke frequently of our illness and she was truly an inspiration to me. She will be missed by the many who knew and loved her. Thoughts and prayers go out to all of you during this sad and most difficult time.

Jimmy and I have great memories of Susan. Ever since 1999 "Maw" Susan was a shinning star up on Sugar Mountain. We loved to stop at her produce store everytime we rode by. One October we bought 4 pumpkins & gourds for our house on Sugar. Those pumpkins were usually gorgeous that year. We marvelled on how long their colors stayed brilliant orange, yellow, and green. After Halloween, I told Susan "those pumpkins were the best we have ever had before". She just smiled and said, "everytime I past your house, I brought you a new pumpkin when it looked a bit rotten". We all just had the biggest laugh. Susan was such a nice lady and neighbor. Heaven just gained another angel.

For nearly 30 years Donna and I counted Susan one of our dearest friends. From working together at Skyleaf to visiting her home in Georgia years ago. In more recent years when I could only visit once a year our annual Mexican dinner and margarita together was always a joy and highlight of my brief stay. If Donna could speak she would surely share her love for their friendship and memories. Susan lived life to the fullest and was devoted to her loving family and more recently to Joe who was able to join us for dinner when I last visited. She is now a beloved angel and we will always smile when thinking of her.

From Michael G. Papas / Tybee Island, GA
I met Susan in 1974 where we ran a State of Georgia community program for low risk adjudicated juvenile delinquents. The energy she brought to the scene was positive, energetic, and creative. We became lifelong friends. Susan visited me and other friends from Savannah and Tybee Island a couple of years ago. She loved showing off her love Joe and her BMW convertible! Susan had arrived at her earthly destination. So many of us will always remember her with love. My condolences to you Brooks, Danny and your families, and to you Joe. God bless you all.

We are so sad to hear this since we left her in October in good spirits and thinking the cancer was in remission. Susan/ Maw's was usually our first stop as we drove up to our home and she always welcomed us as "family"--along with all our guests who made it a point to "go see Susan" when they visited.
What a dear, cheerful, generous, and loving spirit, whom we will miss so much! Our heartfelt sympathy to Danny and all her family in this season of loss--we will hold you in our prayers.

i am so sad. I am so glad I knew her and she loved my parents. My children, as they grew up and visited the mountains always, wanted to stop in just to say hi. I never saw her without a smile or a story to share. This is a loss of huge magnitude to the high country. Hugs to the family. Susan was an incredible person.

Our hearts are broken. Susan was a true treasure. I could not wait until May when we would be able to visit with her once again and spent many, many times enjoying her stories of the area. She was one of a kind and one of the sweetest individuals we have ever met. Heaven surely gained an angel. Prayers for strength and comfort for you all.
