My heart is broken upon hearing the loss of my good friend and former boss whom I had the pleasure of working with for over 15 years. Jonathan was the most considerate, respectable and kind-hearted person to have as a boss and and he was a darn excellent lawyer/lobbyist too!
I extend to deepest condolences to Elaine, Dean, Leya & Michael. May God wrap his arms of comfort around you and give you the strength needed each day.
Blessing & Love,
Edith J. Cleveland

Though I’ve only known you for a few years now, you truly were my favorite person to visit at the BRMC. I’ll miss our baseball talks and the lite hazing from you for being a Red Sox’s fan. I’ve lost way to many family members and friends to cancer and though I would rather still have you here, I’m am glad that you are no longer suffering. I pray for peace and comfort for Elaine and the rest of the family during this difficult time. You fought the good fight Jonathan. I’ll miss you! Go Tigers!

John and I enjoyed music, cigars and good conversation relaxing on his deck during a very chilly evening. Elaine and Michele were drinking wine and lighting our cigars........what a fun evening that was!!!

Jonathan was a lawyer's lawyer. Extremely learned and precise in his work. He was a larger than life figure both in Hartford and Washington. His dedication to his profession and Aetna was surpassed only by his love for his family and his beautiful retreat in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Our prayers are with Jonathan, Elaine and the entire family. John and Judy Troy

My condolences to the Topodas family. Jonathan was a class act and an expert in his field. Of the many lobbyists who visited me when I worked in the House and Senate, he stood out for his honesty and integrity. RIP.

Jonathan and I worked together for more than 20 years. I knew him from my days as Insurance Commissioner through the 18 years I was a Member of Congress. The health insurance industry and Aetna Insurance Company went through many challenging times during Jonathan's advocacy years, but he always unflappable, substantive and very effective. I didn't learn of his bronze star until reading the obituary but was not the least bit surprised. That is just the kind of person Jonathan was--rock solid to the core. Our deepest condolences to you. Leya,
I was so sorry to hear about your Dads passing. Especially this time of the year. I can definitely relate, as I lost my Dad last Christmas Eve. Kayla tells me he was a wonderful man. Please know that you and your family are in my thoughts.

I was so sorry to hear of Jonathan's passing. We worked together at Aetna many moons ago and he was truly a giant in his field. I was a very young, new employee in my first job and Jonathan was such a great teacher -- always kind and patient and that great wit. He seemed to think my vocabulary could use a boost so he started sending me a "word of the day" for me to look up and learn, and hopefully use. Through the years, even though we haven't worked together in many years, I've thought of him whenever I use one of his words. He will be missed.

I worked with Jonathan on several legislative and lobbying issues at Aetna. I always found his counsel to be perceptive, thoughtful and on point. He often provided recommendations that reflected insights that others missed. Even when he was not directly involved in a particular matter someone would invariably say "Let's check with Jonathan to see what he thinks about this." I especially appreciated his calm and reasoned approach when we were confronted with obstacles that tended to raise the temperature in the room. He had a commanding presence and a gravitas that was softened with the grace of a warm wit. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Elaine and family,
I was so saddened to hear of Jonathan's death. He and I met on Capitol Hill when I was Senator Lieberman's Chief of Staff. He was a consummate gentleman and always represented Aetna with honesty and integrity. He understood health care in and out. And, after he retired to North Carolina he still stayed in touch with the organization No Labels that I helped co-found. He offered opeds and insights into working across the aisle and how to break gridlock. He truly cared about making our country the best it could be.
I hope that all these wonderful memories will comfort you at this time. Please know you and yours are in my thoughts and prayers. Deepest sympathies, Clarine

Jonathan was larger than life, and leaves a huge hole in our hearts. It just won’t be the same not seeing his tall, lanky frame walk thru the doors of the Lookout with Elaine by his side. To Elaine and her family, we are just so sad and grieve with you the loss of your beloved Jonathan.

Every memory of Jonathan involved he and Elaine "cuttin' a rug" on the dance floor of every BRMC event. Their love for one another showed through in their dancing and their eyes. Heaven is dancing right now! Love, peace and healing,
