Your dad was such a help to me. I picked up the phone to call him today and got a disconnected message. I worked for IP and PCA over a span of 35 years. He was the best, so smart. A true friend who loved his family.

I've first met Ed Beck at CSUN when I was assigned to the CSUN project to work as a member of the team that was dispatched to CSUN after 01-17-1994 Northridge earthquake. Ed was a mentor and a teacher. He loved teaching. He would simplify and breakdown any problem and make easy to understand. Ed was a problem solver. Co-workers and clients loved working with Ed. Ed's smile would light a room and he was always upbeat and optimistic. Ed will be missed but not forgotten.

I worked with Ed when I first came to San Diego California to work as a consultant with LAW Crandall because they just won a major contract for seismic retrofits of bridges throughout the state. What a true mentor and inspiration for me.

I first met Ed in the summer of 83, I was 18 and had just started working at Law Engineering in B'ham Al. It was a paper mill shutdown in Pine Hill AL, Little did i know at the first meeting how many hundreds of hours over the next 36 years, that i would be blessed to spend and learn from Mr.Ed....from Boiler Inspections, Fabrication Shops and Disaster relief projects, like the one at California State University North Ridge Earthquake project. I also got the opportunity to spend many hours on adventures away from work, From being lost in the National Tree National Park in Southern California, where Ed successfully maneuvered a 1995 Grand- am rental car through a hazardous restricted 4x4 only road to Dove hunting on my parent's farm in north Alabama or simply spending countless hours driving from one shut down to the next, telling jokes and listening to Ed's contagious laughter! My one and only autograph is an AWS D1.5 Bridge Code, that Ed gave me and signed, that reads to a great inspector and a better friend. Ed was a Great Friend and Mentor that will truly be missed!

A giant in his field of endeavor, Ed's straightforward approach to problems, his enthusiasm for his work, and southern wit inspired all who knew him. His presentations at our Florida West Coast AWS technical meetings were as entertaining as they were informative. One of my favorite incidents occurred in a restaurant parking lot in Birmingham. A talking Lamborghini told Ed to not come any closer. He gave the car a piece of his mind! A great mentor and friend, we will miss him.
Godspeed Ed,
Albert Carr

First met Ed almost 50 years ago when he visited Charlotte office. Over years swapped many fishing tales. When things at Law go a little sticky, Ed seemed to have the right mix of keen insight and kindness. Truly a good man.

Ed was a dear friend and fellow member of the AWS D1 Structural Welding Committee. He was my “go to” guy for all nondestructive testing questions. Together, we resolved many structural welding problems.
In 1995, Ed and I were part of a four member team, traveling the west coast from San Diego to Anchorage, explaining what happened during the Northridge earthquake, and encouraging practices to enhance the seismic resistance of welded steel structures in future seismic events. The schedule was grewling, but made delightful by Ed’s ever present humor.
The welding and inspection community has lost a true expert, and I have lost a true friend.

Ed was a great friend and asset to the construction industry over his entire career. He often kept us on the straight and narrow when at Law and later was ready to help when we needed an expert consultant.
I have a great picture of him helping us out on an Atlanta job about 10 years ago. please email me so I can send you the picture.
My deepest sympathy to his whole family.

Ed was a guiding light for young scientists and engineers that work for Law Engineering. We perform projects together at Lake Murray Dam in Columbia SC. HIs casual attitude and excellent knowledge made it easy to learn and work with him. Ed was only 7 years older than me and I hope to have the strength to fight like he did in the last few years. He will be forever remembered by me.

Ed was always cheerful and positive, and he could even speak “southern” in New York and elsewhere, and everyone understood every word. He was genuinely a giver, in an era when giving was not as valued as when he/we were coming along. God welcomes such great men.

I offer my sincere condolences to the Beck family and friends. Ed and I had a working relationship for many years and I have always considered Mr. Ed as one of the finest people I know. He was always full of spirit, kind and considerate. During our travels we enjoyed a glass or two of merlot and I take credit of introducing him to the fine art of eating smoked oysters in the can (normally when we had an annual mill outage). He will truly be missed and I send our prayers and best wishes to his family.
Sincerely,
Jerry and Terry Hebert
