Obituary of Elizabeth B. Scoggins

Mrs. Elizabeth Brown Scoggins, age 85, of Boone, died Sunday evening, March 9, 2008 at Glenbridge Health & Rehabilitation.
She was born August 18, 1922 in Boone to Rev. O. Lester and Clara Bartlett Dougherty Brown. Her family moved from Boone in 1924 after her father entered the Methodist ministry. They returned often to visit the D. D. Dougherty family in Boone and the Brown family in Ashe County. She served as Librarian at Central Piedmont Community College before moving back to Boone in 1985. Mrs. Scoggins attended Appalachian State Teachers College for two years before graduating from Greensboro College with a Bachelors Degree in Home Economics. She also attended Guilford Business College in High Point. Mrs. Scoggins was a member of Boone United Methodist Church where she was a member and served as an officer in the Methodist Women's Group. She also served as an officer in the Mountaineer Garden Club and the Friday Afternoon Club.
Mrs. Scoggins is survived by two sons, Gary Bartlett Scoggins of Mount Holly and James Richard Scoggins of Charlotte, and her grandson, Matthew Scoggins of Mint Hill; and three sisters, Lillie Perry and husband H. B. of Greensboro, Ellen Surratt Otterbourg of Charlotte and Rebekah Fanelty of Rock Hill, SC and by one brother, John Lester Brown of Roanoke, Virginia.
Funeral services for Elizabeth Brown Scoggins will be conducted Thursday, March 13, 2008 at 2:00 PM at Austin and Barnes Funeral Chapel officiated by Dr. George Naff and Dr. Michael Vandiver. The family will receive friends at Austin & Barnes from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM, one hour prior to the service.
Graveside services and burial will be conducted Saturday, March 15, 2008 at 11:00 AM at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte, NC.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to Appalachian State University Foundation, the Annie D. Rufty Scholarship for Family and Consumer Sciences, ASU PO Box 32007, Boone, NC 28608 or to the Building Fund of Boone United Methodist Church, 471 New Market Boulevard, Boone, NC 28607.
