Mrs. Pauline Ethel 'Polly' Ray, 88, of Ashland, Kentucky, and formerly of Blowing Rock, passed away Saturday, January 18th at Woodland Oakes in Ashland. Pauline was born June 11, 1925 in Mena, Arkansas and was raised in Mena and Hendersonville, NC. She was a daughter of the late John Burton and Grace Bowen Lance. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Hugh L. Ray in 2002, her son, Mark Edward Ray in 2013, five brothers and three sisters. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Pauline was a member of the First Baptist Church in Ashland and in Boone. She was very active in both churches having served as a Sunday school teacher and many other duties and church activities. She also served on the Boyd County Medical Auxiliary and with the Friends of the Children. Pauline was a registered nurse and the first in her family to obtain post-secondary education. She trained at the Baptist Hospital in Memphis, TN.
Survivors include daughter, Jane Ray Ehrie and husband, Dr. Michael G. Ehrie, Jr., of Ashland, Ky.; grandchildren, Margaret Bowen, Ehrie, Michael G. Ehrie III, Stephanie Lauren Ray, and Elizabeth Lance Ray; and great-grandchildren, Michael Ehrie IV, Ava Rose Ehrie, and Adelie Murray.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, January 25, 2014, at 3:30 PM at the First Baptist Church in Boone, officiated by Rev. Ed Talley and Rev. Roy Dobyns. The family will receive friends 2:30 until 3:30, prior to services, at the church. Burial will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.
