Obituary of Carter J. Matheson

Carter Jones Matheson, 91, of John Ward Road, Sugar Grove, died Wednesday evening, January 18, 2012, at his home. Born December 16, 1920 in Watauga County, he was a son of Ross and Rosa Cook Matheson. Mr. Matheson was a member of Willowdale Baptist Church, and served as Chairman of the Deacon Board. He retired from the sign division of the NC Department of Transportation. Mr. Matheson served in the U.S. Navy during WWII.
Surviving are his wife of 22 years, Mary Tester Matheson; three sons, Hencle Matheson of Sugar Grove, Ronnie Matheson and wife, Hilda, of Mountain City, TN., and Tom Matheson and wife, Chasity, of Vilas; step-son, Eddie Matheson and wife, Gloria, of Sugar Grove; seven grandchildren, Robin Smith and Brook Matheson, both of Zionville, Chad Matheson of Boone, Heath Matheson and Jessica Thomas, both of Morganton, and Casey and Cooper Matheson, both of Vilas; four great-grandchildren, Lola Rose Matheson, Cole Smith and Katie and Julie Matheson; one brother, Dana Matheson and wife, Ruby, of Sugar Grove; and four sisters, Lena Glenn of Sugar Grove, Juanita Smith and husband, Gene, of Boone, Shelby Cannon and husband, Herman, of Vilas, and Betty Jo Cable and husband, Frank, of Sugar Grove.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Nell Ward Matheson, and three brothers, Len, Rayner and Ed Matheson.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday afternoon, January 22, 2012, at 2 o'clock at Willowdale Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Eugene Braswell. Burial will follow in the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery with Military Honors presented by American Legion Post 130.
The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6 until 7:30 at Austin & Barnes.
