J. C. Phillips, Jr., age 78, of Mountain Dale Road, Vilas, died Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at home. Born James Clayton, Jr. on December l7, 1932 in Johnson County, Tennessee, he was a son of James Clayton and Nellie Greene Phillips. J. C. was a member of the Mountain Dale Baptist Church. He worked for various construction companies in Watauga County, and was always willing to help his neighbors when needed. Mr. Phillips served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He is survived by his wife, Carrie Lee Ward Phillips, son, Jimmy Phillips and wife Kathy, daughter, Kathy Jean Phillips, and grandson, Travis Phillips, all of Vilas; two great grandchildren, Tiffany Mounts and Hunter Phillips; two sisters, Kate Cogan and husband, Pat, and Betty Bentley and husband, Sam, all of Vilas. A number of nieces and nephews also survive He was preceded in death his parents, James Clayton and Nellie Greene Phillips, and three brothers, Bob, Tommy and Earl Phillips. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday evening, November 10, 2011, at 7 o�clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Rev. Eric Cornett. The family will receive friends Thursday from 5:30 until 7o�clock, prior to services, at Austin & Barnes. Military graveside rites and burial will be conducted Friday, November 11, 2011, at 11 AM at the Mountain Dale Baptist Church Cemetery.
