Jack Dempsey Shook, 86, of Hwy 105 S., Banner Elk, the Foscoe community, died Monday, October 24, 2011 at his home. Born June 1, 1925 in Watauga County, he was a son of Dewey and Arvilla Greene Shook. Mr. Shook was a Navy veteran, serving during WWII. For many years, he was employed as a carpenter and rock mason for Carolina Caribbean Corp and McLean Construction. Mr. Shook was an avid hunter and fisherman. In his early years, he pitched for the Foscoe Community Baseball League and his passion for the sport continued until his death.
Mr. Shook is survived by his daughter, Diane Shook and companion Brian Black, and three sons, Jack Shook, Fred Shook and wife, Jeanie, and Robin Shook, all of the Foscoe community; one brother, Dwight Shook and wife, Ruth, of Vilas, and two sisters, Goldie May of Michigan and Pinkie Church and husband, Cecil, of Boone. Nine grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren also survive.
He was preceded in death by his wife of more than 65 years, Mamie Ethel Aldridge Shook, son, Richard Lee Shook, granddaughter, Janie Shook, sister, Sylvia Aldridge, and three brothers, Clint, Varden and Frank Shook.
Services for Jack Dempsey Shook will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 3 o�clock at the Foscoe Christian Church, officiated by Pastors Dan Burks, Ken Caswell and Rev. Tim Coffey. The family will receive friends Thursday afternoon from 2 until 3 o�clock, one hour prior to services, at Foscoe Christian Church. Burial with military honors will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.
