Obituary of Estel G. Wagner

Mr. Estel George Wagner, age 91, of Water's Edge in Lake Wales, Florida and a former resident of Boone, died Wednesday at Grace Health Care in Florida. Born February 16, 1920 in Montana, he was a son of the late Judson and Effie Dean Smith Wagner. Estel was a former member of Perkinsville Baptist Church. He was a real estate developer and the first licensed real estate broker in Boone. Mr. Wagner owned and operated many local businesses, including the Gateway Restaurant, Blue Ridge Tourist Court and the Cabana Motel. Estel also built many businesses in the area, including the Polar Palace Ice Skating Rink in Boone; Pioneer Village Shopping Center in Mountain City, Tennessee; Cedar Rock Country Club in Lenoir. He developed the Estel Wagner Subdivision on Farthing Street and Hillcrest Circle in Boone and built many homes in the area. Estel was instrumental in the development of the Boone Golf Club and served on the Board of Directors for over 40 years. He is survived by his wife of 68 years; Lucille Miller Wagner; three daughters; Elaine Wagner Myers of Atlanta, Jeanette Wagner Potts and husband Ted of Denton, NC, and Kitty Sweet and husband Dale of Winter Haven, Florida, two sons; Allan Wagner and wife Judy of Boone and Brad Wagner of Greenville, SC, nine grandchildren: Beverly Barnett Henretty, Robert Allan Myers, Ginny Potts Whitman, Barbara Mensch, Laura Potts Hancock, Matthew Potts, Cortney Wagner Pagano, Lynnsey Sweet Strouse and Casey �Kiki� Wagner and nine great grandchildren, one sister; Bonnie Herr of Lancaster, Pennsylvania and one brother; Judson Wagner of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Funeral services for Mr. Estel George Wagner will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o�clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will Rev. Harold Bennett and Rev. Ted Potts. The family will recieve friends prior to the service from 12:30 until 2 o'clock at the funeral home prior to the service. Burial will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to a charity of the donor�s choice.
