Mr. Dennis Wayne Payne, age 53, of Pinnacle Drive, Boone, died Sunday morning, July 17, 2011 at Watauga Medical Center. Born March 19, 1958 in Watauga County, he was a son of Dan and Joann Winebarger Payne. Dennis was a member of Boone Advent Christian Church. He worked at Watauga Opportunities. Dennis was active in the Special Olympics and won two gold medals at the World Special Olympics in 1995 for bowling.
He is survived by his parents; Dan and Joann Winebarger Payne, two sisters; Debra Watson and husband Jeff of Apex, and Dena Denney and husband Kenney of Sanford, four nephews, two nieces and two great nieces and his favorite Aunt Dooney of Boone.
Graveside services for Mr. Dennis Wayne Payne will be conducted Tuesday morning at 11 o\'clock at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens. Officiating will be Rev. Gordon Noble. The family will receive friends following the graveside services from noon until 1:30 at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Watauga Opportunities, 642 Greenway Road, Boone, NC 28607 or to the Watauga County Special Olympics, 231 Complex Drive, Boone, NC 28607.
