Obituary of Raymond H. Bumgarner

Raymond Hill Bumgarner, 83, of Hillside Drive, Boone, died Wednesday afternoon, May 11, 2011 at the Watauga Medial Center. Born September 8, 1927 in Avery County, he was a son of Emery Claud and Ella Coffey Bumgarner. Hill served in the Army Air Corp during WWII. Before retiring from the ASU Steam Plant, Hill cooked at Lees-McRae College Cafeteria and the Daniel Boone Hotel. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Boone and enjoyed vegetable gardening and lawn maintenance.
Mr. Bumgarner is survived by his daughter, Daphne Ramsey of Boone; three grandchildren, Eric Hill Ramsey and wife, Stephanie, of West Jefferson, Brian Oakes and Crystal Ward and husband, Jared, all of Boone; four great grandchildren, Coty, Kiersten, Campbell and Aura; one brother, Roy Bumgarner and wife, Joyce, of Whitnel; and three sisters, Leona McLaughlin and Nina Orders and husband, Freddie, all of Morganton, and Thelma Harmon of Statesville. A number of nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Aldridge Bumgarner, one daughter, Hilda Oakes and two sons-in-law, Johnny Ramsey and Cecil Oakes.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon, May 13, 2011, at 2:30 at the First Baptist Church in Boone, officiated by Pastor Roy Dobyns and Rev. Lawrence Goodman. The family will receive friends Friday afternoon from 1 until 2:30, prior to services, at the Church. Entombment will follow at the Mount Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.
