Dr Benjamin (Ben) H. Horton went to be with his Lord on Monday, May 02, 2011
in Watauga General Hospital in Boone, NC. He was born in Sharon, S.C. . His teaching career spanned 47 years and included Cleveland County, Gaston County, Mecklenburg County. He received his Doctor�s Degree from Florida State University in the field of education and at the time of his retirement in 1973 he was serving as Dean of the College of Education at Appalachian State University in Boone where he made his home for over 40 years. He was a dignified gentleman in every sense of the word with compassion and love for all. His concern and guidance will be greatly missed by his family and friends
He was preceded in death by his parents, Buren and Macy Horton, his wife Elizabeth Davis Horton, a sister, Margaret Horton Ponder, and a brother Hugh E. Robinson.
He is survived by two step-sons: John Davis of Charleston, SC and Jim Davis of Virginia, two nieces, Rose Ponder Kresley and Marie Ponder Free; two great nieces, Terrie D. Ellis and Sherrie D. Ledbetter; two great nephews, Brian Curry, Tracy Curry and several great great nieces and nephews all of Shelby, NC. He is also survived by a nephew, Hugh Gettys Robinson retired Professor of Physics at Duke University and lives in Superior, Colorado.
The family will receive and greet friends from 1:00pm until the funeral service at 2:00pm on Saturday May 7th at Boone United Methodist Church. The funeral will be conducted by Reverend George Naff.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Boone United Methodist Church, 471 New Marker Boulevard, Boone, NC 28607 were he was a former deacon, SS teacher and choir member.
